Besides going in, what's the most effective mosquito repellent you've found for sitting on a porch? Bracelets? Spray? Candles? What you got?

Does anyone have experience with a parent going into a nursing home and trying to protect some assets for the healthy spouse? It's looking more and more likely that my dad's going to a nursing home sooner rather than later. My parents don't have a ton of money, maybe $80K in IRAs and CDs and their combined SS income is less than $1,500 a month. I'm trying to do research onto the process, which seems wildly complicated.

With their savings, I don't believe so, but I read that spouses can transfer assets into the other's names without penalty under specific situations. But I don't know what those are. I'm going to call the local Area Agency on Aging tomorrow so see if they can point me in the right direction. It looks like they might need to get a lawyer who specializes in elder law.Do they qualify for Medicaid?

Is your dad a veteran? If so he qualifies for veteran's benefits, which transfer to the spouse once he passes. Not wishing he passes, just another option to explore.Does anyone have experience with a parent going into a nursing home and trying to protect some assets for the healthy spouse? when we had to put my father in a nursing home he did qualify for Medicaid. I think their combined monthly income, which included SS and pensions for both my mom and dad was probably just north of $2k. they didn't have a lot of IRAs and CDs or things like that, and had already sold their house and were living in an apartment. even though my dad's care was paid for by Medicaid we didn't have to give over any of his SS or pension money until after my mother passed and at that point we only had to give over his SS money each month.Does anyone have experience with a parent going into a nursing home and trying to protect some assets for the healthy spouse? can't speak for other states but Medicaid in GA is a HUGE PITA. all the paperwork and hoops I had to jump through every. f**cking. year.
it was practically another full-time job.

I have loads of experience with this, and it will be painful and difficult, but ditto the Medicaid suggestion. Lots and lots of paperwork and he should qualify for Medicaid.

Thanks for the help, everyone. My dad is a veteran (drafted and served in Vietnam but didn't make a career out of it). We're making phone calls today to try to figure things out. Sheesh, it is complicated.

if the nursing home that you're considering is worth a damn they should have a social worker on staff to help you wade through all this crap. those people are a Godsend with this kind of stuff and aren't paid nearly enough for the work they do.

Chick-fil-A Foundation says anti-LGBTQ giving is part of its ‘higher calling’
Didn’t somebody here recently say that CFA had done this long ago but stopped, to make a point about those who don’t go here any more because of it?The head of Chick-fil-A’s tax-exempt foundation addressed the growing backlash against its continued giving to anti-LGBTQ organizations on Wednesday, telling Business Insider that it does not intend to change its ways. He dismissed concerns about the Chick-fil-A Foundation giving millions to organizations that discriminate as an unimportant “political or cultural war that’s being waged.”
ThinkProgress reported in March that the Chick-fil-A Foundation distributed $1.8 million in 2017 to non-profits with a history of anti-LGBTQ discrimination — contrary to repeated promises that it was winding down its giving to groups that discriminate. This included more than $1.6 million in contributions to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a religious group that works to spread an anti-LGBTQ message to college athletes, requiring a strict “sexual purity” policy for its employees that bars any “homosexual acts.”

If you are going to count the FCA giving as "anti-LGBT" than literally any money given to any Christian organization is "anti-LGBT".
It also tells you how insane things are that promoting a lifestyle that says, "We think having random sexual activity with random strangers is not good for you physically or spiritually." makes you "bad" organization.

I think you’re knowingly leaving out some details, but that’s fine. I was really just curious if this was actually news, since I’ve been told it was all in the past.
