Wow, really hard to believe he didn't get more than that. Great value for the Blues at that price. 7.5M AAV.

Blues are a team that can afford to pay this. He immediately becomes their highest-paid player (next is Paul freaking Stastny at 7 million), & Pietrangelo is their defensive foundation at 6.5 million.
Will be a really interesting year for the Blues, though, with Backes, Steen, Berglund, Schwartz, & Shattenkirk all entering free agency within the next two years. They could stand to bring in a better center for Tarasenko; Stastny's a good #2.

the deal kind of makes sense. He got a lot of years and the team doesn't have to spend as much. He's really young so there's still some risk with him.

Good deal. Looks about right. Star player.

I wouldn't say bargain, but both sides should be happy with this. Of course, it could look like an absolute steal in maybe 3 years.

Thats not a bargain. Its a good contract though.

It makes him the 12th highest paid forward, 6th highest paid winger. Bargain?

but by the time his contract his over, he will still be in his prime but will be making less than many wingers. If he keeps up what he did last season, this contract could be a huge steal. But, he could be a complete bust and this'd be a terrible contract. It makes him the 12th highest paid forward, 6th highest paid winger. Bargain?

The salaries are not going to just keep climbing and climbing and climbing unless they do something completely amazing to vastly increase the revenue, therefore the cap, and revenue sharing.but by the time his contract his over, he will still be in his prime but will be making less than many wingers. The cap has increased ~21 million over the last 8 years, which is pretty significant. If they can add 4 expansion teams in good locations, the cap will grow even higher. The salaries are not going to just keep climbing and climbing and climbing unless they do something completely amazing to vastly increase the revenue, therefore the cap, and revenue sharing.but by the time his contract his over, he will still be in his prime but will be making less than many wingers. I always expect a 1 mil increase.
Tarasenko, 8 years, $60 million....BARGAIN!!!
I expect a stagnation until the expansion...then who knows what will happen. My guess is an expansion dilutes things so much that the already tiny middle class is diminished even more. I don't know how that will affect the cap though.
Tarasenko, 8 years, $60 million....BARGAIN!!!
Then we'll get David Moss-esque players being signed for five million dollars per year due to the dilution of talent & the inflation of the cap (and mikey will go insane).... and then we'll get another lockout because of the ridiculous payments.
Tarasenko, 8 years, $60 million....BARGAIN!!!
Thats why I was kind of wondering if the expansion would end up lowering the cap.

Now seems like as good a time as any to mention that expansion fees ($500M or whatever they may be) do NOT count as HRR (hockey-related revenue) and therefore will not directly effect the salary cap. Not that that necessarily is the discussion at hand specifically, it seems worth mentioning.

I assume the biggest factor on the cap is the strength of the Canadian dollar, but I have no idea what its outlook is for the next 5-10. This is when the token economist on 5AF chimes in.

Correct. So much circle j'ing about this deal. It's odd.Thats not a bargain. Its a good contract though.
If we're at the point where it's not just assumed that this type of player will easily re-sign with this type of team, today's NHL is a nightmare.

There was a big shift in who cashed in this year. Young RFAs broke the bank, while older UFAs signed with marginal pay raises.
