Phaneuf to LA for Gaborik
Phaneuf - D, 32, $5.25M cap hit, 16pts in 53 games
Thompson - C, 33, $1.65M, 11pts in 43 games
Gaborik - R, 36, $4.875M, 14pts in 30 games
Shore - C, 25, $0.925M, 15pts in 49 games
$1.75M retained on Phaneuf
Why does Ottawa make this trade? i feel that this just adds to the thought that Phaneuf is not a guy that you want on your team and that he wears out his welcome.

Pretty much. He is bad at the defense thing.

Ottawa makes this trade because less real dollars for them to pay out.

Ottawa makes it because they save about $5 or $6 million real cash (didn't prorate) over the length of the contracts...Gaborik is a much better player than Phaneuf...they had a chance to get out from under that Phaneuf contract with a slightly more digestible Gaborik contract. They have no skill, minus Dutchy (also pulled mid-game for a trade) and Gaborik at least has some, whereas Phaneuf has none. They can't be expecting any playoff revenues for the next three years, so getting a refund check like this is worth its weight in gold to a budget team...also, Shore is a decent piece. I wanted him on Pittsburgh before we got Sheahan. Even with the retention, this is a lay-up deal for Ottawa.

Maybe I am missing something... For the three years left on Phaneuf and Gaborik actual salaries...
Phaneuf: 6.5+6.5+5.5 = 18.5 (13.875 LA, 4.625 Ott)
Gaborik: 4.575+3.175+3.075 = 10.825 Ott
13.875 LA vs 15.45 Ott
Even adding in Thompson's 1.65 it is 15.525 vs 15.45, basically making salary $ considerations null ($75,000 total over 3 years).
Shore is a meh 3C, Thompson is a good 4C. Shore has a better O upside but Thompson is more physical and better at FO. At 25 Shore could improve a bit, but realistically how much?
Gaborik is basically a train wreck, and signed through 39 years old.
To me it just looks like they wanted to get rid of Phaneuf and were willing to shoot themselves in the foot a bit to do it. Unless like I sad at the start of this post, am I missing something? I don't see this as a win for Ottawa, much less a lay-up...

I got $22.425 mil going to Los Angeles and $16.825 going to Ottawa.
Gaborik (happy birthday, I think today) is still capable with the ice time he'll get in Ottawa of scoring 15, 18 goals probably. Phaneuf is a fringe NHL player. They got both better players in the deal given their circumstances and saved money.

Where do you get those #'s? are you not including the 25% retention? I didn't include the rest of this year in my #'s. That would make both sides go up a bit, but basically at the same rate meaning still a close total.

Sent to LA
Phaneuf - 1.995, 6.50, 6.50, 5.50
Thompson - .470, 1.65
Total: $22.62MM
Kept/Received by Ottawa
Phaneuf - .499, 1.625, 1.625, 1.375
Gaborik - 1.363, 4.575, 3.175, 3.075
Shore - .259, RFA
Total: $17.57MM
Savings of $5.04MM through the 2020-21 season minus whatever it costs for Ottawa to retain Nick Shore.
Your post was comparing what LA will be paying to what Ottawa will be paying. Ottawa doesn't care what LA will be paying. Their concern is what they won't have to pay.

Incorrect. Ottawa does not give two flying shits how much LA is going to be paying Phaneuf over the remainder of the contract. Their only concern is what they would have to pay, or more importantly, not have to pay. Ignoring the prorated stuff, if they kept Dion they would owe him $18.5MM through the end of the 2020-21 season. By instead acquiring Gaborik ($10.825MM) and retaining salary on Phaneuf ($4.625MM) they only have to pay $15.45MM through 2020-21, a savings of $3.05MM. Once you add in Thompson and the prorated nonsense Ottawa saves more than $5MM over that time period, minus the spare change thrown at Nick Shore.Your sent to LA included what Ottawa keeps. Ottawa might be inept, but they aren’t going to make a cost savings deal and end owing more money, would they?

I thought that cap retention and money paid were 2 different things? As in Toronto is on the books for 1.2 or w/e for Phil the Thrill but we pay his full 8 million.
Is that not right? I was thinking LA would be paying the full contract for Phaneuf, but Ottawa would keep some of the cap hit like Toronto and Phil.
Did Ottawa do the opposite? Moved all the cap, but will still be paying some $$.

Toronto has to eat 15% of Phil’s $8mm cap hit AND pay 15% of his annual salary, which this year is $9mm (so $1.35mm).When a team trades a player, they have the option to retain a part of their salary (and cap hit). The team who retains the salary then pays the retained percentage of the salary, and also retains the percentage of the cap hit until the contract expires. The following requirements must be met to retain salary:
The percentage retained cannot exceed 50 percent of the player’s salary (including all bonuses) and Salary Cap Hit.
The same percentage must be retained for both the player’s salary and Salary Cap Hit, and cannot be modified.
