Her post reads as if she's quitting IG/social media, not music. But people are dumb.

Saw One Night of Queen tonight (the cover band). Freddie was insanely good, made the smallish venue feel like a stadium concert. Brian May has paid them compliments and I can see why.

My favorite part of that is Michael McDonald talking about the esoteric nature of singing backup in a Steely Dan song.
The whole documentary on Aja is out there on youtube I think, worth it especially for Walter and Donald rapping “Uptown Baby” over Black Cow. Which they got the royalties for.

For no apparent reason a 9 year old Weird Al interview with Dan Rather appeared on my Facebook timeline. Really enlightening about the guy, his work and his outlook.

Al is one of those things I'll listen to like nonstop for a few days every couple years then get worn out on. This interview was done when Mandatory Fun had just been released and hit #1 on the Billboard 200 its first week of release. He hasn't released any new music since. He mentions in the interview that he had just completed his record contract. Further reading says that the way the music industry is segmented currently, he doesn't feel that it's conducive to mass appeal parody like it was in the 1980s-2010s. He's toured often, but not for a year or so, and did a biopic in 2022, which was exactly what you would think it would have been.
I never really thought about it but he seldom if ever did anything controversial, didn't swear beyond mild stuff like "Nature Trail to Hell," he always got approval from the original artists even though he wasn't legally required to (therefore famously no Prince parodies although everyone from MJ to Pharrell, Lady Gaga, Nirvana and Chamillionaire went along), and seems like just all an all around good guy.

If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend watching Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. It's fantastic.

The last thing I'm aware of from Weird Al is the Hamilton Polka, which is - obviously - brilliant. It is also like 8 (?) yrs old at this point.

I've been a Weird Al fan since I was a kid. The movie is great, although I think I'd say UHF is a better Weird Al movie. I also highly recommend going to a Weird Al concert if you ever get the chance. Weird Al at Metropol back in the day was one of the first concerts I ever attended. I most recently saw his Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour at the Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland, and it was absolutely amazing.
Weird Al is a greatly underrated musician, and his band is great too. He's been with the same bandmates (Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz, Jim "Kimo" West, Steve Jay, and Rubén Valtierra) for like 40 years.

I'll never understand the appeal of WA.

He took an incredibly niche market segment and made it his own. I wouldn't call it high art but I respect his work ethic and his approach to his craft. Some of his songs are iconic.

I totally understand the appeal for kids. His songs are family friendly silly fun. Bonus points for introducing kids to the real songs. I heard Eat It before Beat It. By the time Fat was released, I already had the Dangerous album thanks in some part to Weird Al. As I got older, I started to appreciate the original songs more than the parodies. And now, as an adult, I would much rather watch UHF than listen to Even Worse but I still find Al hilarious. I always enjoy his Comedy Bang Bang appearances.I'll never understand the appeal of WA.

Weird Al is a goddamned national treasure. I'm not gonna sit here and say I have his songs on repeat all the live long day or anything, but come on.
