Looked like the same tired team as last year. I tapped out at 3-1.
The Malkin unit had some flashes. Boring game otherwise.

I didn't think they look tired. I thought they looked like a work in progress.

I was at the game last night and can not figure out the point of Kris Letang on the powerplay. Pretty much he carries the puck (slowly) to about the Penguin blue line, maybe a bit more - and then distributes it somewhere for the zone entry. Last year it was often just a dump to Kessel who had some speed.
I mean... we have a few guys who can do that.
I don't think he's particularly good distributing the puck once in the zone, and shooting has the puck has never been his strong suit. Maybe he's a bit better at keeping it in I guess... but just how often does he keep one in that someone else would not have?
I'd rather have Schultz run the unit from the top.. I figure he can still slowly skate to the Penguin blue line on the breakout and snap a pass off just as well as Letang, I think he does near everything else better once the Penguins gain zone entry.

He's paid a lot of money and gets sad if he's not on the top PP. Those are the reasons.I was at the game last night and can not figure out the point of Kris Letang on the powerplay.

Very frustrating game, honestly. They had spurts where they looked decent but for the most part, the same as last year.
I just do not like this defense as configured, I don't see why they continually trot out the same configuration last year and proceed to get stomped by a faster/younger team.

Well, it was the same D with the same pairings they ended last season with, so...

But we were told by the man himself that this is the best D GMJR has had since he got here.
He may be literally the only person who thinks that.
It was fairly obvious coming out of last season that the D was an issue and nothing was done to change it. I'm not sure I can be optimistic about the prospects of this season if it continues to be status quo on that front.

I still think JMFJ's days in Pittsburgh are numbered. There's a reason Marino is still with the team.

The Marino thing makes zero sense regardless of JMFJ's days.

It makes sense because he should play.

I don't care if it's Marino or Riikola, I'd rather have a young guy with some kind of speed/puck-moving ability of JMJF. The only strategy I see for JMJF is to bring down Schultz's numbers so they can try and retain him in the off-season, lol.

Is there any thought that we give up breakaways often because our D for the most part is slow and/or bad positionally?I don't care if it's Marino or Riikola, I'd rather have a young guy with some kind of speed/puck-moving ability of JMJF. I mean Guds, JJ fall into the both category and Pettersson isn’t the most fleet of foot.
Then again, Dumos shitty pinches led to a lot last night

The name of the game is keeping the puck for us...we know we can't defend in-zone very well, so our d-men are counted on to keep plays alive - I actually coach this way a lot and I have to beat it into my d-men to not give up the lines so easily...I'm all about line management, blue lines, dot lines, net lines, those are the keys...so, do you give up some high quality chances against when it doesn't bounce your way? Of course you do. But the risk of allowing a runway of speed to generate for, say, Jack Eichel coming down on JJ or 44 or whoever just isn't a great look...plus, there's going to be sustained zone time against because the only center that really defends well is Crosby...
Play the game on your toes and not on your heels...because you just can't hide defensemen very easily in this league, and especially with our centers...

Yeah Letang and Dumo were both -2 last night. So we can't even blame the bottom 4.

I don't think telling them to play keep in vs whatever matters when the next subsequent move after keeping it in is a shot into the Ds pads or a turnover.

Frustrating game.
GDT: Game 1 - Pittsburgh Vs. Buffalo - 10/03/2019
Letang very much gave the puck away directly in front of the net. I don't know how to break someone of this habit - but this is just a repeated thing mentally that continually happens.Yeah Letang and Dumo were both -2 last night. So we can't even blame the bottom 4.
Sullivan wants them to pinch as far as I can tell because any sane coach would have punished them for it by now.

That's been a part of our game plan for most of the last decade now...and this is how the league largely is, teams attack with 4 and 5 all day long, this isn't new...
GDT: Game 1 - Pittsburgh Vs. Buffalo - 10/03/2019
I don't care about the pinching as much as I care about the dead-ass passes right in front of the net in the slot. That is infuriating.

That's the way you exit or if you're skilled...naturally, putting pucks in the middle of the rink comes with a risk, but I've been teaching middle lane exits for the last few years and they work like gangbusters if you have the skill to pull it off...it's a lot better than trying to ring it around the boards as hard as you can and hoping you smash it up the wall four consecutive times or that it takes a bounce your way...see: early decade Rangers teams.
It's a waste of talent really...
