Cars & Bikes, Driving & Riding
On the way to a Dr appt this morning (which...... no lab coat!) I was merging on to the freeway behind another car and struck some unsighted debris. 2 miles later, blowout city on the left front. I pulled off on the shoulder and inspected the damage - yep, the tire's shredded - got back in the car and fired up ye AAA app. Almost before I got logged in Metro Freeway Service Patrol guy raps on my window. Changed my wheel for the donut and had me underway so fast I was still on time for Dr appt. No charge.

Hmm... it's basically an "Acuraized" Civic hatch with the Civic Si sedan's powertrain. If the price is right, I would remain interested. I'd also be interested in a Type S version with the Civic Type R powertrain, so long as that car still has a manual. A Type S with a manual and AWD would be a very compelling option.
There are so few cars available with manuals these days that my next car will probably come down to this or the VW GTI (or Golf R). I figure I probably have one more new internal-combustion / manual car, and the next one after that will be electric.

I drive so little now that I would probably consider a manual… except that my wife wouldn’t be able to drive the car. That’s a dealbreaker.

Well, that and not wanting to spend $55k on a car.

It's been around for like 30 years, but before 9:03 AM today I had no idea this service existed. lol
Apparently on any LA area freeway you call '511' when you need aid (if a roving patrol doesn't happen upon you first, like what happened with me), and they come to the scene and get you underway again. Changing flats, jump-starts, radiator top ups, taping leaky hoses, up to a gallon of fuel. It's funded by LA Metro and Caltrans, and all services are free. It's a safety and congestion thing.

My car guy group chat does not like the Integra.

What don’t they like about it? Looks aside - I’m not a fan of the snubby rear end - the details that have been mentioned so far sound good.My car guy group chat does not like the Integra.

I honestly had no idea they were illegal here. Nice to see that we’ll finally get them.

The US seems very slow to adopt new headlight tech. It wasn't until, IIRC, the early 80s until the feds allowed automakers to use something other than government-mandated standard sealed-beam lamps (big round, small round, big rectangle, and small rectangle, if I'm remembering right).

Apparently the full synthetic version of Shell rotella T6 in 15w40 is the holy grail of oil right now. I finally got my hands on 3 gallons, which is what my Cummins calls for. There is apparently also a shortage of cummins filtration filters (fleetguard), but fortunately I buy those by the case.

I had either a 2022 or 2021 VW Passat as my rental car this week for my trip. Man, I had to watch myself. The thing was so freaking quiet (especially compared to my Vibe) that I'd get up to 85-90 and not even realize it. It was really roomy too... I'm 6'5" and I didn't even have the seat back all the way to drive. Plenty of leg and arm room.
I didn't like the lane assist. Freaked me the f*ck out.

Lane assist is one of those things that seems like it's a smart idea, but I drove my roommate's Kia SUV one night and the damn thing kept fighting me, despite me having driven that road a million times and staying in my actual lane the entire time.
Right idea, poor execution.

Since they're calling for 3-5 inches of lake effect tonight I decided to get the winter tires put on the Mazda today. Local tire shop is great - got me in on short notice and only $50 to dismount/mount/balance all 4. I was paying about that much 20 years ago.

I may swap my winter wheels on this weekend, as well.

That is quite a steal. I had a guy charge $10 per tire but moved out of the area. Now I'm lucky to get $25 per tire. Which is why I ended up buying two spare wheels with winters already mounted and a hydraulic jack.
