I had a similar friend growing up. Packers, Cardinals, Celtics, Notre Dame.. though those were his teams since he was little. I put two and two together at some point and realized his dad was a front runner in the 60s

I've been Pittsburgh through and through my whole life, Pitt (all sports), Penguins, Pirates, and Steelers. However, the only front running team I ever rooted for was the 90s Bulls.

The 49ers are the only non pittsburgh team I root for...and I don't hate the Steelers necessarily.

I also had an affinity for early to mid 90's UNC basketball with Dante Calabria. I've always hated Duke and their rivalry was always fun to watch.

my buddies and I (pitt fans/pirate fans first) definitely agree that if we grew up in LA, we would be clipper and angel fans. I have no comment of who I would root for if I grew up in NYC.

I'd honestly picture me being a Mets, Nets, and Isles/Devils fan. The only "front running" team in NYC I'd root for over the little brother is probably the Giants. Can't stand the Jets.

I also want to ammend my previous comment. Buccos are always number one in my heart, but I've been a Cubs fan my whole life as well. All started with my love for Ryne Sandberg, Grace, Dawson, etc. And then continued to love that team as my 1B.

I was an NBA frontunner of sorts. But now I'd just say I like rooting for individual players. I liked the Magic (Shaq), MJ's Bulls, the Cavs for LBJ's first go-around there.. now I just tune in to whatever seems interesting. Kinda like watching the Hawks with Trae tbh

I tune in more when it's "new" teams involved which is why I think this year I watched the NBA playoffs more than any other year in the past 2 decades. Having the Hawks, Bucks, Nets, and Suns in there was fun. I guess I'm anti-front runner. I typically tune out when it's the Lakers, Celtics and more recently the Warriors, etc.

Same can be said in other sports when it's the Yankees, Red Sox, Cowboys etc.

The only front runner team i root for is the Steelers and it's because I'm from Pgh and rooted for them my entier life.

I struggle with the "root for a college I didn't go to" thing for some reason...

What about teenagers, people who don't go to college, or go to colleges that aren't D1?

I mean like I said I went to Akron. They don't really compete with the big boys so I have no issue pulling for them and Pitt. It's probably different going to a powerhouse like Rutgers though, makes it an easy choice

Yeah...I don't know...it's not a hill I care about, much less die on...it just always feels a little weird to me for no obvious reason...

I don't know, do people root for Bishop Sycamore high school...? I guess maybe it's the "approachable" factor. Pro sports are not approachable to individual generally. No one here is going to be in the Pittsburgh Steelers organization. You guys are just New Stanton townies, fair enough. But like everyone here could have gotten into Pitt...you get 200 points for putting your name on the SAT, that's most of the way there...

Yeah a friend of mine in the early 90s was a Yankee/49 er/Manchester United and was from Pittsburgh. Please **** off Mr. root for the good teams. Fortunately maybe the niners helped him build character eventually.

I had a friend who played football when I was at Grove City. He’d come back to the dorm after a home game and we’d all be watching PSU or whatever big game was on. He’d always be like “thanks for the support guys….” We weren’t shy about telling him they should stop sucking and we’d go.

Narrator, “Grove City football never stopped sucking”

Typical Terps. Win games against a decent team and a few nobodies, get hyped about how the season’s going and a bit of national notice, than have a legit Big 10 team come in and steal your girlfriend and your lunch money on national tv.

The best part is they get their cute little 'Blackout' set up and SVP is hyping the game on his show and by halftime, they're getting trashed and 3/4 of the students are gone. It's ok, Twerps, someone has to finish last in the East.

I like GT for this reason: because football is a difficult full-time job, the players typically take the easier/easiest majors each university offers. But, because Tech is such an academically strong institution, yet so very narrowly (pretty much engineering) defined - players there do not have many options. So, a good number of GT players are --- business school majors. And because GT business school - despite being the school's weakest link - is still pretty good is absolute terms - GT players are pretty smart...
