So that answers your question regarding the optimists' excuse for this roster. If Jarry can win the mental games in the playoffs, this team is an upgrade from last year. The team that finished first in its division. And there may not be a Tampa-like team this year, so who knows?I think DeSmith wins that series.Going into the playoffs last season, I think most people could have reasonably said that a run to the conference finals would be considered a success. We weren't going to beat Tampa, so get that out of your minds right now.
Divisional playoffs, facing NYI and WAS was the best case scenario. I think BOS would have given us fits.
With that said, the Penguins fell into a worst case scenario. The referees had Don Cherry's hands up their tooshes playing them like puppets, their 1A goalie, coming off a solid season, realized he wasn't potty trained and made a mess all over the ice, and the pull up diaper of Casey DeSmith got hurt.
Not sure what you do in the off-season to correct that. Not sure if DeSmith would have saved the team, but regular season Jarry would have gotten us past the NYI. If you're Hextall, you hope Jarry learned a lesson, lifts some mental weights in the offseason, and have a run at it again. They're "stuck" with the superstar trio so you hope to squeeze a bit more juice out of them before it's a lost cause. The role players are just that. Changing them around really doesn't help what happened last year, nor will it help that much this year. Not in a significant way.
I also think we’re in a paradox where we have to give Jarry a chance to blow it again, and it makes sense that we didn’t screw with his brain by bringing in a guy like Halak which would just create a season long controversy.
DeSmith can win games in December and Jarry has to feel like *the guy*. So here we are.

https://obituaries.mineralwellsindex.co ... 1083171204Jim Mannella, age 64, of Garfield, surrounded by his family, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 1, 2021.
[...] Jim LOVED hockey and was a Penguins season ticket holder for many years when attendance was at most 5,000 - he loved his team. He was happy that he could celebrate for the last 17,272 days that the Philadelphia Flyers had not lifted the cup.
RIP, Jim (not that Jim).

Jim sounds like a good dude. Anyone who spends their last days listening to “Jim’s Funeral Mix” gets a thumbs up from me.

We don’t have a 3rd or 4th line, and losing Ceci isnt nothing. This roster got blech quick. Goaltending doesn’t make up for that.So that answers your question regarding the optimists' excuse for this roster. He's a Pittsburgh kid. Probably his last shot, given that he keeps bouncing around the A.

Nice to see Bartkowski still going. Last remnant of my “career”.

Bartkowski is one of the few mid to late 80s birth year Pittsburgh area products I don’t know, but I’ve heard he’s a stand up guy. I hope both these guys perform well enough to earn contracts

I know couple guys from Lebo area that have faced him in A league once or twice during the summers. That seemed pretty cool to me.

Don't really have high hopes for this season at all honestly. Not a cup contender...playoff team probably? This roster is just kind of there.

Crosby wanted to have a vaxxed and waxed summer so he put off surgery til September. Smart.

I’d rather he miss the start of the season than the end of it.
