Honestly they have no idea how to connect with casual moviegoers. This is even more of a circle jerk than usual.
As such, I watched Mortal Kombat. Entertaining, I guess? I think the fight choreography is better in Warrior, to be honest.

Interestingly enough, I've seen most of the nominated films for the first time since having kids. Having most of the films streaming was really excellent, as we don't have an indie theater nearby that plays these types of films.

Try to contain your jealousy but I took my son to see Dragon Slayer: Mugen Train in the theater today.

First time since the pandemic began. And I had a reward of free large popcorn and large soda.

Mortal Kombat was really fun. Didn't overstay its welcome with that 1hr50min run time either.

Nomadland wins best director, actress, and picture. Eddy must be crushed.

Yeah, that’s the ideal Kevin Hart performance - a cameo. 30 minutes tops.

I’m a big fan of Statham and Rock, so I’ll generally give their stuff a try. This is the first FF movie that I’ve seen since... FF3?
You’re in luck!

That's too bad. I put them on and saw sound of metal win editing and that was good enough for me. Also saw Tyler Perry speech and I really knew nothing about that guy, speech was impressive and he seems like a good person. Even with the makeover I could only make it through 30 minutes, I can't see these awards show making it much longer

We watched Sound Of Metal last night, and it was easily one of the top 2 or 3 most personally terrifying movie experiences of my life. The idea that something like that could happen, basically over the course of one or two days is just........... *shudder*
Glad that I wasn't the only one who felt like I was going to have a panic attack while watching. They completely nailed making sound and no sound the driving character of that movie.

Yep. I know a few people who complained about the lack of character development, so I asked them if they had any idea WTF Mortal Kombat was even about. Just enjoy the fighting.

Man, seeing Harrison Ford up on the stage at this age is really starting to confuse my brain on how they are going to make a new Indiana Jones movie.

I haven't done anything with MK since the original console version back in the mid-90s. So I could remember my favorite fighters (Sub-Zero, doh) and a bunch of others. My wife was the one that made us watch it and she knew everybody. I thought the character building was interesting enough that I was curious if there was an 'MK mythology' that had been fleshed out since the original game. I saw a documentary, I think on Netflix as one episode of that miniseries on the history of video games, which detailed the making of MK and other fighting games so I knew they were pretty much making it all up when they started. I thought it was neat that they had development elements at all.

Now I wish I would have watched.
Yeah this ended up being really awkward. Best Picture has always been the last award presented so when they rearranged the show it was pretty obvious they were going for the big Chadwick Boseman finish. It was even more awkward when Hopkins wasn't there. He wasn't even on Zoom. The show just kinda.. ended. Hopkins did release this today:

Do we need a West Side Story remake? The music is among the best ever for Broadway. The original film is perfect. I mean, it's even set in the 50s like the original. It will be good, I'm sure, but unnecessary.

Yeah that's insane. Why **** with the order like that anyway? Haven't a had a chance to see The Father yet, but by all accounts sounds like either would've been a deserving win (wasn't a huge fan of Ma Rainey, but Boseman is of course great). I would've watched if I were able, would've been quite the surprise.

For the first time since the early 90s, did not like Halle Berry's look. The Posh Spice haircut, not good.

I'd just put a bag on her hair.

She has rocked short hair better than any woman I can think of... but that was definitely not a good look.

If anything, at least the Boseman/Hopkins thing shows how not in the bag the Oscars are.

The Father ended up being my favorite of the best picture noms and that was in no small part due to Hopkins. He was so convincing that it was a relief seeing him in that YouTube acceptance video appearing healthy.

For all the gripe that usually accompanies the show, it's been a fairly unpredictable affair the past few years now.
