You realize they have a new President and GM, correct? The owner sucks, but well-run organizations in similar financial situations have found ways to succeed anyway. Why shouldn't the new regime get a chance to prove they can do it right?Difference is that the Rays have a plan. The Astros had a plan. Even the Royals and A’s had plans. I wouldn’t have any confidence in Pirates management to have a competent plan. Could have capitalized on the string of wildcard runs but instead, they fizzled.Yes, but the Rays make it work. You can operate a team at this budget by trading guys at or near their peak value and having good player development. Huntington did neither. And as soon as all of these prospects exhibit competency by 23 or beyond, they will be gone. It’s a **** neverending cycle. Until new ownership is found that actually wants to put a winner on the field, this is what Pirates fans will be stuck with.So they dumped Musgrove, Taillon and Bell. They didn't really change the face of their top ten organizational prospect list, but the beefed up the top 30.
Between these trades and the Marte trade from before last season, and the big DSL class from 2019, it will be at least entertaining to look at the MLB box scores. This is tanking, beyond any level of tanking embarked on ever before, so they are guaranteed the top draft pick in 2022, and likely in 2023 as well. As soon as any player on the current MLB roster exhibits any level of competency, they will be shopped.
There's a reason why the Rays bounce right back so quickly after a down year. Hell, they just traded Snell... his value will never be higher.

I’m more willing to see what happens with this team now than before.
I’m always going to be skeptical that this is all for nothing and continues the cycle of suck.

Fangraphs likes the return, Yankees have a deep system, none of these guys were throw ins.
I was thinking about it this morning, the timing of these 3 trades is a bit confusing. For these three trades to have been made in succession like that, it was clearly orchestrated, with their being no 2020 MiLB season, their data and scouting on all these prospects is a year old. they could be acquiring a bunch of duds and not know it. Considering the age of a lot of these prospects, a lot changes in their first full seasons of MiLB.
Could be overthinking it, considering the heavy Intl concentration of the return, maybe BC came to the Pirates with the necessary information and structure to pull this off. Below are all of the international prospects BC acquired this offseason (and when they were signed). Kind of have to think that he came to the Pirates with a good understanding of the international talent pool, and some direction for who to target.
Miggy Yajure (2015) Roansy Contreras (2016), Endy Rodriguez (2018), Eddy Yean (2017), Luis Oviedo (2015). Jose Soriano (2016), Omar Cruz (2017), Maikel Escotto (2018).

To me the Taillon move is a no-brainer. Dude has had two Tommy John's, cancer, and baseball-sized dent in his skull. Can't blame him for the cancer or being hit in the head, but he's a completely unproven commodity. Only thing he has going for him is his 2nd overall pick and good MiLB numbers. His MLB numbers have to be taken with a grain of salt with the TJ's on top of it. Don't get me wrong, I had hope for the guy and liked him a lot, but you can't be expecting much from him, especially a team like the Pirates.
That said I also expect he and Cole to finish 1-2 in the Cy Young this year.

The Pirates have now added about 10 good prospects to their system this offseason across several avenues of acquisition (Rule 5 Draft, trades, international signings) and now have 26 prospects in their system who last year I graded as 40+ FV or above. By my current count, only Cleveland (27) has more.

Rocker and Green can be our Strasburg and Harper. (sorta serious)
Elijah Green, OF, TNXL Academy (HS)
Green is about as good as they come amongst draft prospects. Quite literally the prime example of a perfectly optimized prep bat, he’s already had exit velos in the triple-digits and generally has launch angles in the 18-20° range. An easy plus runner who also possesses a plus arm in the outfield, Green is without a single tool that doesn’t grade plus or better. You can slap a 6 on the arm, run, field, but the power should reach a 7—if not more. The teenager possesses a relatively low maintenance swing compared to year’s past power hitters. Creating natural loft (maximized by his body tilt) in the highly optimized swing, Green’s bat gets to ideal points at launch and contact, including a relatively steep vertical bat angle. There’s not much more to say about him. He’s the best high school hitter in the country right now and if it were possible, reclassifying into 2021 and coming out draft eligible as a 17-year-old with his tools has the capability to break Bobby Witt Jr’s high school record signing bonus of $7,787,400. The draft and dynasty world will be drooling over Green throughout the next 18 months and beyond.

Better chance at the 2022 first overall pick as well. Don't need one of those useless 10 game winning streaks in June screwing that up.

Jayson Stark clarified that MLB has already responded and said that the Cactus League has no say on MLB training camps, so their letter is a meaningless gesture.

Also sounds like the players are very much against a delay. they see any shortening of the season as a way to cut pay.

And they would be right. There is zero reason to cut the season at this point.

It's also a possibility that if the Pirates didn't make any moves this offseason 25 prospects in total might not have even changed hands.
