Okay, I'll start.
How does a teleconverter work, and are they worth the money?

Sorry, tif, I missed this the first time you posted.Okay, I'll start.

I have no need to tc's in my line of photography but many wildlife and sports photographers swear by them. I'm pretty sure you lose a bit of light, maybe a stop or two, so you'd want to be starting out with a relatively fast lens.

I can just imagine rolling up to a bridge, tossing that thing overboard....... and never seeing it again.

I had read that about losing the stop or two. I think I'd go for a 1.4x (effectively making my 70-300 a 98-420), but I have already alerted Mrs Tif to my intention to get a better telephoto with image stab before the next airshow (in September). I don't know that a tc would do me much good on my current lens; it's a 4-5.6, but that seems to be about the norm for glass in my price range.Sorry, tif, I missed this the first time you posted.Okay, I'll start.

Nikon D90.
This is the lens I currently have, and the only one I'd be using the tc with.
These are the two lenses I'm looking at as a replacement: A 55-300 and another 70-300.

I'm definitely not experienced with aviation or telephoto lenses (I have a 300 prime I use a couple times a year, but that's it). There's a pretty awesome nature photographer named Steve Perry (not the singer) and he used to have a gear list on his site. There might be some useful info there.

If there is a newer digital photo thread forgive me (and merge this with it)...
Have a 3 year old Canon T3i (LCD is not touchscreen) where somehow between Christmas Eve night and waking Christmas morning I have a starburst crack in the LCD glass. Does not affect the LCD, and the lenses are just fine (and image quality doesn't suffer). The operative question knowing the age of the body... it is worth trying to get repaired or will that cost me so much as to make it more worth my while into upgrading the body?

You probably just broke the glass/plastic covering the screen. You should be able to buy a replacement on Ebay and diy. I cracked the little window on my D800 last year and had to replace it. It was pretty easy to do.

Thanks - not sure why I didn't think about that, as much as I'm on ebay for trains and the like! You probably just broke the glass/plastic covering the screen. My mum in law let me borrow her Canon EOS 7D to take pictures of the golf course in Augusta for the Masters. She gave me a wide angle lens and a big zooming lens, would one of these work better over the other for taking shots of each hole throughout the course?

For outdoorsy landscape shots, always use wide angles.

done and done. Thanks shmenguin, I played around with the camera all weekend and have really spoiled myself with the beast. I know they are pretty pricey, but I see myself investing in a camera like this in the near future. Anyone have any suggestions on something similiar as a good starter? My mum really liked this Canon, but then got a Nikon that has a more universal lens for everything and hasn't looked back. Maybe I can talk to her about getting this one from her...

For starters, go to a camera shop and actually hold them in your hands. I was a Canon guy before getting into DSLRs, but absolutely hated how they felt in my hands, and switched to Nikon. On top of that, I think the menu system on Canons isn't as clean as Nikons, but it's personal preference. Are you looking for a point & shoot, or something more advanced (and expensive) like a DSLR? Budget is going to determine a lot of what you do, more so than what you intend to use the camera for.done and done. @eddysnake, i don't think you'll care either way as far as nikon vs canon goes.
this is a good starter kit:
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-Digital-Foc ... B00HQ4W1QE
get a cheap telezoom like a 55-200mm, and you'll be all set.

My soon-to-be wife and her sister want to get a camera for their mom for Christmas.
I'm not an expert on cameras so I'm asking the "experts" of 5AF for some suggestions.
Price range is probably 200-250 and she really just uses it to take pictures at family gatherings and events at her house. She's big on uploading them to her IPad or PC and making slideshows and what not.
I've looked at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TQA7V70/re ... JOJM&psc=1 and https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RKNNGUQ/re ... XG3S&psc=1 but have no idea.
Any suggestions?

Avoid those bundles like the first link. You get a bunch of crap you don't want or need.
Photography
Any thoughts on the 2nd link? She's real big on Facebook and putting pictures on her phone/iPad so one with WiFi would be a big hit.

For that purpose, isnt the iphone camera way more than adequate?
Oh...that says phone/ipad...not iphone/ipad. Nevermind.

Here is what I currently have. Just picked up a tripod finally. I'll have to get some of the images I took in the Sierra Nevadas in July.

She could do that but for some reason unknown to me, she likes using a camera. I'm fine with using my phone for any pictures. For that purpose, isnt the iphone camera way more than adequate?
