Out of nowhere Tornado warnings are fun.

What happened to just a simple good old fashioned severe thunderstorm? These tornado warnings are getting old.

Apparently a tornado blew through Washington Blvd/Allegheny River Blvd right before rush hour. Yours truly got stuck in that traffic (turned around) and figured it was flooded.

The trib is reporting that western pa averages 6 tornadoes a year. There have been 12 this year including 9 this month. In may 1985 there was 11 in one month.
How was I unaware of all of this ?

Yeah that's wild. I remember bunkering down all the time in the 90s, but I feel like now, there's maybe like, one warning max during the season? The trib is reporting that western pa averages 6 tornadoes a year. I remember destructive tornados and then being told "oh, noooo, those were actually microbursts" as if the flattened house cared if there actually was a funnel or not.

I'm in a local (to me) Facebook group that has a lot of northern transplants in it. Periodically, someone asks about homeowner's insurance companies after they get an outrageous renewal. This last time, one individual said it was climate change and of course, Myrtle gonna Myrtle, some local said that climate change was made up because we haven't had a "major" storm in years. Since living here, we've had two documented tropical storms, an ice storm, and several severe hail storms that caused a lot of a damage. We tend to only look at the huge weather events that the media (and social media) focuses on, and not the many, many smaller events that affect fewer people.I remember destructive tornados and then being told "oh, noooo, those were actually microbursts" as if the flattened house cared if there actually was a funnel or not.
This was near where Freddy, MWB, MiMH, and meowdaddy live back in April. No major headlines, but it affects homeowner's insurance everywhere.

Was that from hail? I'm trying to figure out what could have caused something like that, and unless the siding was brittle, I'm just not understanding. That's pretty bad.

That was from a hail storm up there. It's probably vinyl siding, which is popular down here because it's cheap.

May 31 1985 was probably the majority of them all in one day. My parents neighborhood in hermitage (they didn't live there yet) was a trailer park and got completely demolished. We moved in our place in 96 and would always find shingles or stuff like that in the yard. Our nextdoor neighbor was the only trailer to surviceThe trib is reporting that western pa averages 6 tornadoes a year. There have been 12 this year including 9 this month. 30 years later to the day another one came through the neighborhood and my brother and I were just watching trees bend at weird angles out the window not realizing there was a tornado until our mom called and said she couldn't get in the neighborhood and cars were upside down at sheetz. Morons

I was staying with my grandparents in Brentwood the night of the Mt Washington tornado in 98. Ton of wind, rain, and lightning while we stood on their front porch.
Probably the closest I've been to a tornado warned storm until this year, and there's been 2 in the last 2 weeks (the cell that spawned the tornado in Moon and the one yesterday that didn't even produce much rain or lightning).

amazing drone footage of Iowa tornado

If this was the trailer for Twisters, I would say the effects don't look great. That's footage is so incredible that it looks fake. It reminds me of watching Planet Earth and seeing the drone footage of the huge animal migrations for the first time. It just doesn't seem real.

I think it's because you can see all the sub-vortices on the outside of the typical tornado funnel. Usually those are inside and not immediately obvious unless some of the condensation at the bottom lifts.
The lighting is also in that uncanny valley since the interior is darker than the stuff going around the outside.
