I semi-regularly go to the midwest (Michigan, Iowa, etc.) and I'll fly out Friday afternoon and try to get back in my apartment in time for breakfast Saturday morning...

Paying for it herself… you’ve not been married long. Plus there’s kids involved.

Our money goes to the same account but having separate accounts is pretty popular.

Okay, so I’m gathering my initial reaction of “that’s a silly way to spend money.” Is somewhat off base. Just wanted to get a feel on how other people would react.

On the disney thing I wouldn't care if my wife wanted to go on a day trip. Go have fun. None of my business really to be honest.

I feel like we've discussed the bank account thing before.

We have a joint "house" account that mortgage and other house related things gets paid out of. We both dump "X" number of dollars in that a month.

We have a joint HYSA account that we both dump money into each month to build that up.

We also both have our retirement funds that we dump money into and that we are each others beneficiaries etc.

We then also have both separate personal accounts. I think we both technically have a card for each others, but I don't ask or care what money is in there, nor does she care what is in mine. It works for us so that is how we've always done it.

I think we've had a big discussion around this before here. My wife and I both have separate accounts. It was mainly to separate our checking accounts, since I use Quicken to balance everything and she still uses a checkbook. No real reason to do this with our Marcus accounts, but whenever I ask she never wants to deal with it, so here we are. I'll probably work on combining our Marcus accounts this year.

Eh. It depends on the person. My wife would love it. For me, I'd rather do a weekend trip. That's a lot for one day.

Seems to me like one could get the same experience by going to a sauna all day while using $20 bills as fuel to keep the fire going. Oh, and take a public bus to and from the sauna and ask the person behind you to kick the back of your seat. Bonus points if someone on the bus gets into a fistfight or gives you the 'rona.

My wife and I have completely separate financial lives, so to speak. We support each other as needed but there is no comingling of funds as part of normal operations. We divide up our shared obligations in proportion to our income (about 2:1 since I earn almost double her income). It's great. No arguments, no guilt trips, no paranoia.

What's more interesting to me is my Dad and step-Mom had shared finances all of their lives. She up and retired (without telling my Dad) from a state government job at 54, severely undercutting her pension. They continued having shared finances for the next few years until just recently they split everything up. He got tired of her spending all of 'their' money on trips, shopping, and sending money to her sisters out west. Especially now that he is also retired, so they're on a set income. Now she has to live within her means and is starting to feel the pinch of her poor choice to quit her career so she can sit at the house all day and watch true crime documentaries.

There was a rough period for a bit but they've adapted to it. There are some quirks that manifest themselves in funny ways. They used to have big jars of candy all over the place for the grandkids and my Dad. Those are now gone because they're having a little stalemate about who is responsible for the candy budget.

We put a certain % to a shared account, which covers shared retirement/investments, family expenses, etc. then the remainder is separate. Helps us have "no guilt" spending money. So if I'm going on a trip, like above, it's just checking on childcare and not on the financing.
