I cant even imagine looking at a receipt and quibbling over 3 dollars or whatever that was as a tip. Especially with family/friends. That's just some pretty ass bullshit.

What meow isn’t telling us is that the $77 was actually just him at the bar pounding margaritas and chips with Queso… right?

Not the dadhole. Even if I was pissed that you presumed to spend more than the allotted amount, it's a few bucks and there are worse things I'm worried about.

Yeah, I'm with the general group here...that's a silly one. If you threw $10/$20 of their money at a takeout tip, I think it's dicey there...that's when you have to go for your own cash I think, especially if you have any sense of this person being a stick in the mud. But for $3...just pretend the food cost $80, lady...get bent...

Re Mexican Takeoutgate
I agree w Rylan, in that if I'm ordering from a regular place like that I'd just go ahead and pay myself. Let MIL pick up the tab elsewhere during their stay. But that doesn't really factor into anything.
Before I comment on the substance of the dispute, I would like clarification: "I tip to round up to $80"..... was this round up tip the total tip on the order? Or is it a round up to $80 and then tip based on that as the new total? It sounds like it was the former, but I want to be sure.

Bill was $77. He said "just take $80" so the tip is like $2 and change.

Correct.Bill was $77. He said "just take $80" so the tip is like $2 and change.
We typically have a $23 bill and tip it up to $30
Cash is actually a good thought from the group. Problem being that I haven’t had cash on me since like 2019
mrs meow gave me the “you know how she is” response
she a dodint approximately 100% of the time

Re Mexican Takeoutgate
You're an dadhole for 'tipping' $2 on a $77 tab. But that's between you and the delivery driver/restaurant.
You're an dadhole for making decisions with someone else's money, no matter how small the amount. ("she a dodint approximately 100% of the time")
She's an dadhole, generally: "we don't tip on takeout" - f**k you lady, if the restaurant has tables and waitstaff you tip for takeout like you would if you were dining in. (e.g. more than $2 on a $77 tab)
She's an dadhole for making any amount of fuss over this. But that follows if the dadhole+time postulate is accurate, so much of this was foreseeable/avoidable.
Next time: Dig into your pocket and fish out two crisp $1 bills as befitting someone of your financial largess and station in life. The driver will probably be able to get away with claiming they found it in the center console of the car and get out of pooling it.

that’s a good point and actually something that crossed my mind as I was walking out. the tip amount was so small that I probably should have just not tipped. I kind of got stuck in between my typical juicy tip and no tip and pussed out with an insulting one

If you're regulars at this place you can make up for it the next time you and Mrs Meow order for yourselves.

This is why I don't take people to places that are "my spots." But, that ability to "fix" it is something I wouldn't have thought of. I like that.

I mean, if you don't order from the place again until 2024, then I don't think the fix-it option is viable. But if you order from them next Taco Tuesday Friday per your usual habit, then yeah I'd throw a few extra shekels into the pot.

So was she just being her normal dodint self the rest of the night, or did she keep bringing it up with like snide little comments? Also, are they staying with you and purr while in town, like in the guest room...or are they in a hotel?

You really can't even find a dinner entree under $15 anymore

Yep, my parents stay with us when they visit, and we make it a point to avoid our 2 main watering holes...both for dine in and takeout. They aren't cheap, but my dad has gotten... particular...at his current age, and doesn't bite his tongue if something is on his mind. Not necessarily a bad thing within reason, but I'd rather not have him dodint about the price of a buffalo chicken wrap or the fresh cut fries not being as good as potato patch to people we see at least once a week.

if your MIL doesn't tip on takeout, I hope she never visits the same place twice because if she does, she's getting spitters....or worse.

If she has morals like her daughter I'll come over and give her another tip that starts with 2 to complain about.

Re: tipping on take out. What's the rule if it's a buffet? At the local Chinese place I grab my own container, fill it, then take it to the cashier who rings it up and puts it in the bag. I usually round up to the nearest $5. Just wondering if I'm being cheap.
