Correct. Soft society. Thinks complaining makes a positive difference, looks to complain.

Out of curiosity, what is the material difference between this and a player leaving their bench to join a scrap?

What do you think?

I understand that the box doesn't have a way to cleanly exit the rink, but he was not technically one of the players on the ice for the play when time expired.
But I'm also not sure if the rules count a guy in the box as "in play". IMO it feels like a gray area, but like I said, I'm just curious to what the actual difference is.

1. He didn't do anything. That's the biggest thing about the spirit of rules. That rule is designed to prevent bench clearing brawls. No brawl happened. This was a fairly routine scrum. So there's nothing worthwhile to adjudicate on...nothing happened that would provoke anyone to root cause this...
2. 70.10 only says that a player leaving the penalty box illegally will receive a 10 game suspension. Is there any legitimate claim that he left the box illegally...? Seems to me that he was let out at the scheduled time, after the game, by the box man...

70.4 covers this situation more aptly imo
by my interpretation of this, he should receive a 10 gamer. But obviously he’s not getting a 10 game suspension. He should, at the very least, receive 1 game imo

To #2, I don't know, that's what I'm asking. I just don't know how the league determines what's a legal exit vs illegal exit in this scenario, where a player hops in a scrum at the end of a game.
I didn't see any complaints outside of what was posted about here, oddly enough. I'm just curious as to what makes it cut and dry when, IMO, it does seem like a little gray area.

Why are you searching Twitter for something like this? Read the rulebook and make your own determination

I can’t tell if this is a bit or not

70.4 is meant to prevent players gooning it up when there are offsetting majors. That doesn't affect manpower on the ice, and players have to wait for a stoppage to be let out of the bin and rejoin the ice or the player's bench. A 'stoppage of play' is not the same thing as the game clock running out.

I don’t agree with that at all. The rule clearly mentions if it’s a single player exiting the penalty box, which means it doesn’t relate to offsetting penalties, and I guess you can be pedantic but to me the end of the game can be referred to as a “stoppage in play”. I’d concede if end of the game scenarios were called out specifically elsewhere in the rules but they aren’t and to my interpretation this fits that rule most appropriately

So you want the 90 year old guy in the box to keep him in there until…when exactly?

the problem isn’t that he left the box, it’s that he left it and immediately skates over to an altercation
genuinely curious: if this was a random game, a player was in the box, the other team scores in a power play, a scrum ensues, then the player, after existing the box, skates over the join the fray…would you be ok with that? to me this is effectively the same thing (the game ending doesn’t change the situation at all)

that’s ludicrous. Are you guys ok with the benches clearing at the end of the game then?

they are absolutely no different in my mind and I need you guys to explain how it’s different in yours
He was not on the ice when the altercation started. Him being on the ice because he was let out is not an invitation to join the altercation
