Right, there's the clumsy wording by Peel taken from the half quote of a hot mic. That's optically not good and it's easy to take action on him because he was only on the payroll for another month anyhow...if Wes said it, they'd have a little bit more explaining to do...here, you can just dump this body in the river and move on without having to really explain the issue head on...which is good, because there's a lot of nuance to it and people would sit there and nitpick apart...this is easier and better...

So I finally listened to what he said.

I say again, what is the big deal?

I still have zero issue with what was said. Even the dude he was talking to said “I know”

It is a legit tactic refs use to call penalties early to try and keep the game at a certain temperature. Maybe he knows Nashville uses their sticks a lot. Or their D grab guys. I doubt this penalty was a complete phantom. It was probably ticky tack. Who cares?

I didn't watch the game because I'm not a masochist, but it seems like the problem is that the game wasn't getting out of hand, it didn't need "managed," the players weren't chippy. It was just to try to keep the score close and/or give a make-up call. Is that what we mean by "managing the game?"

Managing doesn't just mean "getting out of hand"...

It never means keep the score close...

Gotta try to balance everyone’s impression of “justice”...whatever it may mean.

What if, hear me out. You called penalties that were penalties and didn't call penalties that aren't penalties. Players might learn that whenever they commit a penalty, they'll actually get called for it? Would be crazy to get some consistency. But thinking outside the box here..

And I don't mean call every ticky tack penalty. I mean if something is a penalty in the 1st, it's a penalty in the 3rd. If it's a penalty when it's 0-0, it's still a penalty when you're down 4-0.

Sounds easy though...just like players, you get the exact same every shift...you can set Malkin to a metronome for the last 14 years...

I understand that. They're human. I'll equate it to baseball. Theoretically the strike zone is written in stone, over the plate, knees to numbers.. some umps have a bigger zone, some have a smaller zone. By the second inning or so you know if he's giving you the corners, if he's not calling it at the knees, etc. and you adjust as such. Why is it impossible for a hockey ref to be consistent over the course of a game?

Because the strike zone is a defined space. Black and white.

That's the thing. It's not black and white. It changes every game, and players adapt. If you call something a trip in the first, make a decision.. was that a mistake or are you going to call it that tightly the rest of the way? Players will know what kind of game they're getting. Same with hoops. Some nights it's called tightly, some times it's not. Players figure it out.. they don't quit calling fouls with 5 minutes left.

What other sports seemingly changes the way its game is officiated based on the score or time left in the game?

Since every fan knows that they don't call penalties late in playoff games, that is the consistency...it apparently happens the same way my entire life...so, there ya go...late in games, the penalty slider goes way, way down. You know it, I know it, players know it...bing, bang, boom...
