Wowwee. Made that monster of a man Ristolainen look like a mouse.

Side note, what a disappointment that guy is

I can't even pull the between the legs shot move off by myself at a controlled speed. Can't imagine choosing to do that in the moment when you're at full speed, just shedded a defender off and are crossing in front of the crease

I tried that once in a roller hockey game, missed the net and had to chance the ball down the street. That was embarrassing.

@meow - thoughts on these lucky lunges being goal of the year vs something like fleury game 7 finals where it took intent and strength and all that to make the save.

I disappointed myself with that phrasing but my bad take is that those are eminently unimpressive saves because it’s the same maneuver whether the puck goes in or not.

...I think I just phrased it even worse tbh

I believe you're trying to say that these types of saves are all luck because they're just throwing their stick at a spot and the puck is hitting it

To which I disagree because if you pause it at :04 you can see the puck on his stick and Korpi turning with his eyes on it and then getting his stick out there and watching it in the whole way

They don't move my needle much. It's an unathletic, desperation, lucky save. Kudos for keeping it out, but it isn't a skilled play

It's a re-focus of training with an improvement in equipment...

Sticks are lighter and all, sure. But go back and watch Kent Nilsson, even go back and watch Rick Middleton and these guys...they were walking people playing in old skates and with telephone poles as sticks...the emphasis was different.

Even when I was a kid, you had drills without pucks...I haven't done a drill without a puck (that wasn't like purely a battle game) in at least 10 years now I don't think...in the last few years, I gave up on hard skating as punishment in practice...hard work, hard skating should not be considered punishment...

I had a junior coach that never made us skate further than the width of the ice for conditioning. Someone asked him about it and his response was “If you can skate 20 feet, you can skate 200 feet. Once you get to top speed, the benefits for conditioning aren’t there anymore.”

That's a very good point from a hockey perspective...can't speak to it from a science perspective, but I was never the most conditioned person anyhow...my first shift though, ooh, look out...
