So someone should've just brought Parros down to ice level and tried to slam his head to the ground. Would've saved them 245k.

I like to think @Dickie Dunn has that series of laugh GIFs saved on one of his desktop sticky notes at work for instant copy/pasting.
We need NTP to merge them all into one gif for all to share.

this is evidence against worshipping the history of a sport. it's not what people want. campbell's not fired because he got ass paddled at a secret ceremony in manitoba in the 80's.

move on. make the game better. leave the good canadian boys behind

I’d categorize myself as a hockey purist. I don’t want the game fiddled with. Don’t fiddle. No need to fiddle.

That said. Protecting players isn’t fiddling with the game. The safer the game, the more skill can take over, the more exciting the game. I love me some big hits and some organic scraps. But bullies don’t belong in the league. Intimidation is an awesome thing, but it can be done without WWFing some guy you have 40 pounds on. I don’t know guys. I’m in a weird state of mind on this whole thing.

I'm with meow.

Also, between the fine (expected) and the Buchnevich hearing...is this not the best example of "in hockey, they always get the retaliatory", eh...?

3 on 3 OT is a good fiddle. The OT/SO framework requires more fiddling, though. not done yet.

replays are useful if executed correctly. a good fiddle gone wrong, but correctable with more fiddling.

purism confuses me. the game doesn't look the same, generation to generation. i think you need the rule book to come along with you.

Can’t argue with those. I’m more talking about other fiddles. Like the new offsides rule where your foot can be off the ice. That was not needed and I think makes those plays more difficult on linesman. The goalie pad fiddling. Not needed. The picking which dot a face off goes to. Not needed. I’m not on board with replays for the most part.

replays in any sport require a deeper financial investment from the league. there should be a headquarters watching every moment of every game, and when a call for a replay is triggered, HQ should have the resolution ready before the phone even gets picked up. you need a bunch of talented bodies on the payroll though to pull this off. if you speed it up and remove on-ice refs from the process, there would be good results for offsides reviews. goalie stuff...i dunno, i think we can still get there with defining what interference is.

I miss when face-offs could happen anywhere on the ice and not just on the face-off dots.

I don't get how replay is so hard for leagues to get. Have a sky judge for every game; the sky judge gets a moment to tell the refs on the ice "hey I'm gonna take a look at this". sky judge gets a minute or less to give their ruling and can override an on ice ref.

I don't get why refs on the ice/field are involved with replays at all. Them putting on headsets and walking over to a screen is such a waste

The explanation I've heard is that the leagues want the on-ice/field officials to be able to explain for themselves, to the coach on the bench, why a call was made. If they simply say "because sky judge" then the officials on the playing surface lose their autonomy and their control of the game.

This is one of those obvious things that will die when boomers go away.

funny to implement a fatally flawed strategy so that coaches don't have to wait an hour for an explanation.

This is the first season since he 90s that I haven't gotten Center Ice (or whatever it's called now), so I'm well out of the hockey loop. Actually got wind of the latest Wilson thing from the Pat McAfee Show, of all things. At some point in time, Wilson is going to find himself on the receiving end of tomahawk to the skull. Not a 'tomahawk-like chop', an actual tomahawk.

Players like him are so frustrating, because he's got actual skill. He can play the game, he can make an NHL roster without resorting to hoooliganism. He's got some sort of deep seated personality defect that will only get sorted after the aforesaid tomahawking.

It's because we saw that way too many times with Lemieux. And Jagr. And Crosby. And Malkin.

We're spoiled.

mcdavid made the correct face when edmonton won the lottery.

nobody watches his games so nobody cares or knows what the refs are up to.

Speaking of - and this will likely upset a few people - but I’m of the opinion that records, etc for this shortened season might as well have an asterisk on them. I saw a thread on Reddit about McDavid, and one guy points out that it should be noted that the entire season is divisional play, and Edmonton is hardly in a powerhouse division. Downvoted you oblivion. Not trying to take anything away from him, but it is different.

McDavid and Matthews play in the AHL and their individual efforts this season mean absolutely nothing to me. It’s like Mario against expansion teams for an entire season.

Doesn’t matter with McDavid. Whatever he does isn’t gonna hold a candle to the 80’s and his point totals are truncated cause of the 56 game season. There’s no asterisk because there’s not really an *achievement*. Same with matthews.
