There were a dozen teams that scored 300+ goals a year in the 80s, and a few that topped 400 goals. League-wide, teams averaged close to 4 G/gm through the 80s, and today that's more like 2.5-2.7 G/gm.
League scoring has been 6 goals per game over the past four years. In the 1980's, it was a shade over 8.

League scoring has not been in your range since 2004. It was only above 3.75 goals/per team/per game ("close to 4") from 1981 to 1986.

"pre-butterfly era" was intentionally phrased. it's a good trail marker to show the incidental/coincidental shift in quality, not a description of every goalie's style.
And what will happen when you realize that the flaws in the butterfly style is one of the reasons why scoring is up in recent years, because goalies aren't good enough to stop what shooters can do now, particularly at more acute angles. So, in 20 years, will we have to discount Crosby and McDavid because they were playing in the "butterfly era"...?

It's just tough to take this level of shortcuttery and expect a confident result...

If A & B are different things. And B & C are different things. It doesn't mean the gap between A and B is even close to the gap between B and C.

So. No.

All I know is, is if meow was born in 1915 and knew how to play the position like I do now, it wouldn’t be called the Veznia. It would be called the meow

You're right. Which means we need to properly evaluate those gaps to make an informed decision...

Wouldn’t a good high-school goalie of present day be better than a goalie from the 60’s or maybe 70’s?

Vladimir Putin scores 8 goals
I imagine this is what listening to the game is like
Czar Putin screams down the right wing faster than any player has ever traveled! A blistering 12kmh, he takes a long turn feigning almost losing an edge and rips a 20kmh shot through the goalie’s glove. How can anyone shoot so hard.

We’ve just received word during the intermission winger #2 on the Putin’s and d-man #4 on the dirty Chechen team have been gifted a glorious vacation to the beautiful Siberian getaway compound and will not be available for the rest of this game or probably ever. God I’m jealous of their luck.

It looks like they won the trip on this play, you see here the superhuman Putin executes the incredibly difficult head first throw the stick pass and it gently bounces from winger #2’s skate to d-man #4’s stick who is promptly thrown into the boards due to the power of the pass.

This has come up several times, and, really, even on the page you're on. The answer is: no chance. Not even close.

Fine, top level college hockey goalies would be better for sure. Just mechanics, training, nutrition, fundamentals, present day equipment.

Although for curiosity sake. Why wouldn’t a present day top level high school or college goalie just dominate against guys from 50/60 years ago?

So in the 60’s and 70’s goaltending was ok and then in the 80’s they started pulling people from the stands as a marketing gimmick. I think this is what happened.

This is not a productive area of discussion, as it is very clear you have not seen any meaningful length of hockey from the 1960s...

If your point is, "Washington should have nuked the British", then you're right and that's all...
