What are people's thoughts on recognition systems (outside of bonuses/raises)?
At my old job the reward points were also linked with the non-sales referral system, so like, if a friend was opening an a checking account, i would "refer" them to basically the only bank in the region. And over those years I accrued a lot useful things (bose headpones, marmot raincoat, calloway hybrid, dozens of books, etc).

I don't agree with the earlier posts. Money is good, but employees feel appreciated once a year when that raise/bonus happens. Recognition is important for certain people, not so much for others. It needs to be meaningful and genuine, not a points system or something like that (we do it and it's dumb, no one cares). An email or a thank you from someone in a position of power is meaningful, and if you aren't in that position an email recognizing someone for good work and copying the big boss goes a long way too. Again, for certain people. Some don't give a sht, which is fine

You know what goes a longer way than the email copying a big boss? An email copying the big boss and a check for $250

I micro-incentivized with money. I had a transactional task. I set a bar...once you get over this bar (quantity) and got these results (quality), we scrape some of what we get for the task into your check every month.

It cut my head count down on this task from 6 down to 4 (covid cut it to 3) and we got even more production than we had with 6...might not be possible, but there's an easy case to be made that folks like money over hard candy...sorry if money is a complete non-starter in your case...

We are starting a recognition system and giving points (equates to money) for achievements/contributions. It does feel kind of hollow to me tbh, maybe because it doesn't feel genuine and seems to maybe trivialize things? But if it gets the team more money, maybe it seeming hollow doesn't really matter.

Plus you pay tax on the stuff you buy with the points. Scam!

If it's anything like where I work, you'll see a lot of people handing out points to their own inner circle.

Things are looking more and more up for me. I mentioned to my new boss that I'd like to move into a real office instead of just having a desk back in the shop. She thinks it's a great idea, since I'll be managing more and will have to be more in the loop on the goings on instead of hiding in the back of the building all the time.

I’ve been “on call” for 16 consecutive years. Every single day. I had to field calls on my honeymoon and when my kids were born.

I very much don’t like the construct in this country, and would prefer to make less money in return for a higher quality of life.

After my boss called me multiple times, while my wife was in the process of pushing our daughter out of her body, I proceeded to start turning my phone off when on vacation.

First day back to work since training ended last week, and there are half a dozen fires that need to be addressed ASAP. It's like they all collectively decided to just ignore the smoldering until I returned to the office.

Couldn't agree more. It's unhealthy and flat out wrong. I just keep telling myself it's a balance. The technology that allows me to WFH is what keeps me connected when I don't want to be.

That said, the Europeans have it right.

I have full sick and vacation leave accumulated since late 2019. I rarely take much time off during the school year, because the kids and wife are in school, but also because of the guilt of leaving my staff shorthanded. American companies - even colleges - run so lean that it's tough to take time off.

That being said, my ass is using those days this summer.

Yeah... I've been accumulating many, many days and the number of days I get per year go up in August.

I can only carry over 30 pto days a year, and I'm at 35 days. I'll be waiting on those beautiful days to just take off and do things around the house.

Work lowering our max is going to force me to take more random days off. I'm okay with that.

We're weird in that vacation is capped at 75 (if you're under 5 years service, temporarily lifted due to COVID), but sick time is not capped.

I'm at like 50 vacation hours, and probably 50 sick days (not hours).

I wish I could move some of it over to vacation.

Just use your sick time as your random days off.

Which also brings me back to pointing out that I hated having separate buckets for this ****. We have one bucket where I work now. Use it all how we see fit.

Separating sick vs vacation has no validity...
