Here's an actual scenario that played out for me this week.

So, we're losing positions soon, furloughs, etc.

One of my staff interviewed for another job and got it. They told me Tuesday that their last day is Friday, but if I could not tell HR or our supervisor that they were quitting until after Monday, so they could collect any potential severance package. We continued the small talk, and I went back to my office and began processing:

So this person wants to lie to my supervisor about her employment status, to milk our employer for whatever pitiful potential severance they are going to offer? Lose my job for you? My supervisor called at that very moment about another issue and I let her know that the staff person was quitting Friday. Our administrative team is still deliberating cuts, so any info they get about someone leaving could possibly save someone else's position. I was told to get a letter of resignation to make it formal, so I emailed my staff member immediately to get that letter to HR at their earliest convenience.

The next morning (yesterday), I'm home waiting on the garage door guy to finish, and I get a letter of resignation and a terse email that this staff person was done as of that morning. This person apparently emailed tons of faculty and staff about their "poor treatment" and told some of my staff that I went behind their back to rat them out.

Is there anything wrong with how I handled this, other than perhaps telling them in person after asking me to lie?

They put you in an untenable position, and I hope the coworkers who are staying will understand that.

You did the right thing imo. Also, I don't think reporting an employee leaving constitutes "going behind their back"

That seems to be the consensus, but why do I still feel bad about it? Management, as always, is for the birds.

You feel bad because you let someone download their dumb, emotional garbage on to you...you did the only obvious thing you could do...

There's no emotional reward because you prevented someone, some unknown from getting canned...that can't be acted on here, to no fault of your own...

Think of the other side had you not said anything. A good friend/co-worker could have gotten bounced when knowledge of that person leaving would have saved that other person’s job. You had zero to gain by keeping that quiet since you’re in that management position.

You did it by the book, which is exactly how it's always supposed to be done. When it comes to employees leaving, I play it the HR way 100% of the time, for exact scenarios like that lol.

Thanks, all. This person is a nutter, and I think they wanted something/one to blame.

On a related note, I applied for another position back on July 6th through a state university HR system. Other than a form email stating my application is complete, I have not heard a word about it since. There is no direct contact on the job ad, although it does list who this new position reports to (and I can find an email through a campus directory). When is it appropriate to email and ask about the status of the application? The listed anticipated start date is September 1, which isn't that far away. I know from experience those dates get pushed all the time, but I would love to know if I'm even being considered.

I find it's usually good to reach out to the person if I can identify them, pretty quickly after I apply to introduce myself and let them know I've made myself available.

1/3 of our faculty got voluntary retirement package offers, including me, of course.

26 weeks of gross base salary, plus $7500. If I "retire" before next Friday, I get another $2500. Tuition remission for another year (doesn't apply to me) as well. The crazy thing is the offer stands for 45 days! If I get another job, like the one I posted above, I could voluntarily retire and collect the severance package...yikes.

They sent it out to a wide swath of the faculty, to make sure to dodge the ageism complaints.

Is that really that good of a deal given this environment? Why not just bounce, and go get another job? Seems like that's what they want.

Yeah, problem is this is the worst time in higher education to look for a job. I have one app out there, and I'm looking around for others regionally.

If not "enough" people take a buyout does that lead to layoffs?

This is my first thought. If they don’t get enough takers, is the next deal better or worse.

I don't think most of us can be bought out easily, as we have tenure. But if not enough of us leave, staff and non-tenured faculty could be let go. Staff are being told Monday if their position has been closed. Not a lot of time for retirees to make a decision imo

Anyone ever have someone self-declare themselves as your matrix manager? It’s quite a f***ing paradox

What a loser. Matrix management is a thing you lie about on your resume, not actually talk about.
