The feds got their biggest single-year raise since 1981, as much as 5.2%. The Pittsburgh locality only got 5.06%, of course.

Due to a quirk in the calendar, there were 27 pay periods in CY23. December 31st is the first day of the last pay period of the year. Because it begins in CY23 the first full pay period of CY24 doesn't start until January 14th and ends January 28th. This means we won't see our first paycheck with the raise in it until February 8th.

Funny how for tax purposes the year ends on 12/31 but when something is coming to us it ends two weeks later. ;)

Hopefully you enjoyed your day off today. I tried to get my CCW permit at the courthouse and found it closed. SMH

I start my new gig tomorrow, and I couldn't be more stoked. The admin that's taking over some of my basic responsibilities now that I'm gone is simply not up to the task; before I trained her she did not know how to rename a file in Windows)......... it's 2023, how the f**k is it even possible to have an office job and not know how to rename a file??? I had to write a product bible for the attorney so she could do the marketing clearance stuff.

I'm not trying to big myself up and say "the place will fall apart once I leave, because I'm so awesome and they can't do anything without me". It's just evidence of the knock-on effects from the entire business unit getting torpedoed by the layoffs last spring. Every department has people that are up to their eyeballs in work they shouldn't be doing. I think the unit might be wound up entirely by the end of this fiscal year, and that's a bummer.

I've been off since the 15th. I am in a world of pain. I almost just want to find a different job instead

Only 30 emails in my inbox when I returned to work, with half of them being meeting cancellations due to the holidays. I'll take it.

My least favorite day of the year. I only took two days off last week but man I love the holiday shutdown. Back to reality.

I was the horrible person that scheduled an early morning meeting the first day back from holidays. Only availability for people for 3 weeks.

I will accept all the shame.

I took the day off… mostly because my daughter has the day off school and my wife is back at the university getting all her TAs trained for next week. An extra day sounds great. Kiddo and I will go visit my parents now that we’re not sick (still got the mucus, but not feeling sick).

She LOVES Five Guys, so we’ll do that for lunch too. Good end to winter break.

I came back to just 40 emails alone from my boss about updates and have about 10 tasks I need to start working on. I'm taking today half speed as much as possible.

I was not prepared for this return, this time.

I will be giving notice to my employer next week.

I know this will garner lots of joking responses (which I fully appreciate) but I'm legitimately asking what I say word for word when I leave. I will be doing this via Teams video and it will 1000% be awkward and awful. I've only ever done this once before and don't remember what I said, as it was equally awkward and I tend to get hysterical memory loss. Right now, I'm thinking of going with "I wanted to let you know that I am resigning from <<company>>. I am planning on my last day being <<date>>." Is this okay?

I'm also not good when put on the spot in awkward situations. Any advice for what to say/do if I'm asked why, or asked to elaborate any further other than "I'm leaving and my last day will be x"?

or

I usually say something along the lines of, 'unfortunately, I am turning in my resignation effective [date]', then go into a short talk about why I was leaving. Write something down, even just a few bullet points, and have it in front of you in case you forget/freeze up.

I'd say be as candid as you feel comfortable being.

If I was your boss, I'd want to know why you're quitting, because I'd want to know if it was something operationally that needs fixed, so probably plan for that question to come up.

I'm a firm believer of short and sweet.

"I'm resigning effective "X" date. I will do what I can to facilitate the transfer of my responsibilities to whomever may be taking those over in that time frame."

I wouldn't really give any reasoning to be honest. If they asked I'd just say I found a better opportunity or something along those lines.

short and sweet is best, and then depending on the terms you and whoever you are giving notice to are on/will be on, feel free to give actual reasons why you're leaving. And if you don't have it in you to tell them why they suck, just say it was something you couldn't pass up

I've been very candid in meetings (with both my boss and the SVP) for almost 2 years now as to my unhappiness - which is my boss and his overworking of me and giving out free money via paychecks to others. In his heart of hearts, he'll know that being a terrible manager is the reason I'm leaving, yet will still be stunned when I tell him. That's why I'm hoping to keep it short and sweet. If I'm truly honest, then I'd be burning bridges which I don't necessarily want to do. So, I fear being put on the spot and essentially forced to tapdance/lie/etc. It's like, look - you made coddling slackers a priority so I'm out. There's nothing more to say.
