Need a good rec for a new laptop. Ours is on its last legs, so figured I'd pick one up when the deals are hot.

Doesn't need any computing power tbh. Mostly it will be used to check emails, surf the web, have decent video capabilities, have MS Office, etc. I'm thinking of buying a photo storage stick to store all our photos, as that takes up 90% of our current laptop's memory. Get rid of the photos and a small HD should do the trick.

Is a Chromebook a decent option? Any other suggestions?

I would not get a Chromebook.

I generally buy from the Dell Outlet.

Source of the post I would not get a Chromebook.
Ditto. What's your price range, and do you have a preferred screen size?

I like my Chromebook for browsing and email, but if you want MS Office and decent video capabilities, I recommend not a Chromebook.

Yeah, avoid chromebooks for video. What sort of video are you looking to do?

Just zoom stuff for video really. Even after the pandemic we may use it to call my brother every once in a while. Not so much for watching movies, although that may come into play at some point.

Seems like most are suggesting to build my own? I'm hoping to keep it cheap, again because it's not really a well used piece of machinery in our household. Between $400-500 maybe? Screen size isn't too important, let's say around 12".

Oh, I thought you meant video editing. Call me crazy, but I feel like you could just buy a tablet. The new iPads start at $330.

My recommendation was based on your video meaning to Zoom. I've done Zoom on my Chromebook, but it's still spotty. Granted it's 3+ years old at this point, but unless you want more than browsing, email, and google docs, I'd avoid Chromebook.

Less expensive option:

The splurge option (better everything): https://www.newegg.com/acer-a515-56-56d ... 6834316938

Sorry, yeah, it's a little over $500. I included it because it's still a really good option for around $500. Double the RAM, more CPU, etc.

This is more for my wife, and I'm not sure I can sell her on the tablets. Mainly because the keyboards are so small if they have one at all. Guess I should have mentioned that. Maybe a Samsung Galaxy?

Edit: Saw the Acer rec. That may work

Indeed I am. Vertuo and Original Line machines. Both are awesome and make a high quality cup of coffee. If grinding beans and dicking around with a French press or Moka pot weren't such a pain in the ass I would use them more often, but they are so I don't. Nespresso ftw.
