Good read on the off-season moves likely for the Bucs.

I like the idea of a Fister or a Samardjia on a one year deal and the Pirates have to get something for first base.

I'm going to burn some sage to further ward off all of the other thread's negativity on Wednesday night.

I would say respectable hitting first baseman is far and away the biggest need. As it was at this time last year.

Gonna need a #3 starter too. Can get by with Happ (if brought back) and Morton at the end of the rotation till Glasnow/Kingham/Taillon is/are ready

Hopefully Diaz develops some with the bat and they won't have to hit the market again after next year to find Cervelli's replacement.

I think they sign Happ. The guys that they let walk for reasonable deals, Marlon Byrd and Edinson Volquez have both shown to be worth those deals. I'm thinking specifically of guys that had stints with the Pirates that boosted their value. Happ seems to be a carbon copy of Volquez, I think a two year 20MM deal is doable for Happ and Pittsburgh.

The rotation deserves to have at least three reliable, veteran starters.

If the pirates are going to spend money, it has to be on proven commodities, and Happ is a proven commodity a this point. Plus, hes kind of old and most likely won't get a 4th year on the market. So two years/20mm is very digestible.

It's a good market for finding pitchers this year. Of course money will be thrown out left and right by clubs, but I'd really like to see the Pirates land a couple fish, even if they are of medium size.

I think they will get two starters and then make Morton/Locke fight for #5 with the winner eventually going to long relief when Glasnow is ready in june,

Don't forget about Tallion.

Or Fister, Latos or Kennedy. Kennedy would most likely end up costing the most

Fister was a ground ball machine in past years, right? Seems like a good fit. Latos has always seemed like a putz and he has crappy tattoos.

Latos is a putz and his wife is annoying. But he's shown flashes of very good pitching, it's just been fleeting. I think him and Fister are good candidates. Maybe it's just the fact that he dominates the pirates, but I've always been intrigued by Mike Leake too. Big ground ball guy

Starting Rotation

Gerrit Cole ($500,000 for purposes of this article) and Francisco Liriano ($13.67M) are stone cold locks. Charlie Morton is guaranteed $8M, but you have to think he’s going to be on the trading block in some sort of capacity. However, I’ll keep him here for now. I have Jeff Locke pencilled in for $2.7M (estimated). The Pirates will need one more starter, but let’s save that until the So What’s Left section.
There has to be about 0.01% chance that Locke gets a $2.7M guaranteed contract from the Pirates. At best he get's non tendered and then brought back for ~$1M.

Also from Olney’s post, he reports that the Pirates are in “informal discussions” with Ben Cherington about a possible front office job. Since being fired as Boston’s general manager last summer, Cherington reportedly declined opportunities to interview for both the Mariners and Phillies GM jobs out of a desire to take some time away from the game. It’s fair to speculate that a position working under his friend Neal Huntington could be more attractive to Cherington than a return to the full-time grind of a GM position.
