Taylor does a good job, but DK canning someone who actually wants to be there seems like an odd move given his frequent turnover.

That's interesting. I thought he was a little too analytics heavy for me (knowing that's his "thing" and probably why he got hired in the first place).

Here's what DK has to say:
Everyone: We'd made an offer to Danny Shirey to stay aboard and provide hockey content, including Drive to the Net but with the very real possibility of more, on a per-piece basis, identical to the arrangement we have with our NFL analyst, Matt Williamson. That was turned down.
Nothing had anything to do with the caliber of his hockey analysis, which I found -- and always expect to find -- to be excellent. Not everything's a full-time fit from either side. Really like this young man, hoping for nothing for the best, and I wish it'd continued here.

Did he snipe someone from The Athletic to take over?

So he only wanted to pay him per-piece, was he full time?

Reason enough to note Mark Madden's idiocy.

Silly and juvenile.

No **** Big Sexy. Silly and juvenile has always sort of been the key to most movies made by SNL cast members.

Actually I trust the man because of all the bullcrap in the Pittsburgh media, his schtick would best fall under silly and juvenile with little craft to the "humor." Almost unlistenable unless he's doing a serious interview or talking hockey.

What does Mel Kiper have on ESPN that they can't let that guy go?
Kiper: “If Jimmy Clausen is not a successful quarterback in the NFL, I’m done. That’s it. I’m out.”

McShay: “What is your time frame, Mel? When do we make that assessment?”

Kiper: “I want eight years.”

Kiper ended up with egg on his face when Clausen was drafted 48th overall by the Carolina Panthers. The bold prediction has looked even worse over the years as Clausen has been out of the league since 2015 after compiling a starting record of 1-13.

If Kiper is true to his word, enjoy it should have been his last year calling the draft for ESPN at the end of (2017).

I find it really funny that DK took the high and mighty route, all the while trying to lowball Danny down to a per-piece spin. What a **** heel.

I guess people (tweets in response) don't read because it says in NYT tweet that no layoffs are expected. Apparently all the sports writers and editors have been reassigned to other jobs there.

I thought I remember seeing a dig against DKPS awhile ago that his staffers were just 1099 workers? Not too long ago he gloated he's profitable and hiring full time right after The Atheltic layoffs, he does this. Don't point it out to him or he will act like a child and ban you though. What an ass.

Dude uprooted his life to move to Pittsburgh and wanted to be (continue?) full time and DK low balls him. Does Taylor take too much of the hockey budget over there? Why can't they keep a second hockey writer?

I think at the beginning they were 1099. Some might still be, who knows. But I think after that story came out a few years back about him/his wife, and the 1099 thing being part of that (IIRC), he supposedly changed it and now gloats about offering benefits, etc.

I was reading DKs Friday insider column this morning.

DK constantly says he doesn't care about any other outlet outside of DKsports and will not comment on them, saying it below him to comment.

Yet this exact quote was in his DK Insider (and he does this on a regular basis):

"No, Jarry never had a "chronic hip issue", as had been reported erroneously back in February by an outlet where the minuses keep piling up."

He literally goes out of his way to say he's taking the high road, and then continually takes stabs at Athletic and Rossi/Yohe. His ego seems ginormous, and I am on the side that he's more the problem than he would admit when it comes to people not getting along with him.

He's very much 1A in the spot that he thinks he's bigger than the sports he covers.

DK's content is going free: https://dkpittsburghsports.com/2023/08/ ... pirates-dk

Subscriptions will be for the community/commenting section, Q&As, and some other perks. Interesting.

My immediate suspicion is that subscription numbers aren't great and new members aren't coming onboard, so get more eyeballs on the ads through free article and hope that most of the (probably loyal to this point) member base sticks around and keeps paying.

Regarding DK going free. Trying to get that sweet YouTube growth.

(I think he’s just hit a wall, and it’s easier to get as clicks)
