The permanent memorial finally is opening. Just reading quotes and seeing the photos, it looks good.

The last time I was there was probably 6 or 7 years ago when it was just a small building and a fence with flowers and other items to honor the memories of those people.

I still remember every moment listening/watching the news that day.

Wife and I went there last year. We went in the off season and were the only ones there. So eerie and quiet, very somber. Well done.

My mother in law went to the teardrop memorial in NJ last week. She took lots of pictures and showed them to my son....and then proceeded to describe 9/11 to him. I was kind of waiting to discuss that with him when he was, ya know, older than almost 4 years old...

A huge chunk of the private funding came from the sale of commemorative pins by Philadelphia-area jeweler Steven Singer...... a long-time sponsor of The Howard Stern Show. ("I hate Steven Singer", on the other corner of 8th and Walnut; that guy) He also is a sponsor of a radio program that was then local only to the Philly area, hosted by Michael Smerconish, but which today is the morning drive show on SiriusXM POTUS 124. Smerconish did a piece about the funding shortfall at the Shanksville memorial, and how kind of sparse the facility was, and Singer offered the proceeds from the sale of the pins. (That's Smerconish in the tweed jacket on the website) At the end, they raised something north of $350,000, making them one of the largest contributors to the cause.

Flash forward to 2015, there is currently an effort to finish a memorial in Bucks County (home to the largest contingent of Pennsylvanians killed on 9/11, iirc) called the 'Garden of Reflection', which will be Pennsylvania's official 9/11 memorial. Smerconish was asked to be on their board, and he came up with the idea to revive the pins. Singer agreed, and in the space of just two weeks they raised just over $50,000, which should be enough to operate the memorial for an entire year.

Interesting, tif. I was never sure what to make of SS as a brand. Kind of want one of those gold dipped roses now.

Yeah, I think he was Stern's first syndication sponsor ever. I've wanted to support him for that over the years, but have never found anything I really liked on his site. Honestly, I don't even like the pins I just mentioned. (Of course, it's not supposed to be about the pins.)

We try to stop by on our way home from the maple syrup festival every year. It is always an emotional trip. Looking forward to seeing it all finished up.

Would Godric text nasty texts with the pins or punch them?

I haven't been to the Flight 93 Memorial but was arm twisted to go the NYC Memorial/Museum.

They've done a spectacular job of memorializing in a very respectful way.
