Macys closing downtown

Postby Miami Vice » Mon Jul 13, 2015 10:55 am

The last department store downtown is closing.

In the early 90s my dad ran the Thom McAn shoe store on 5th, where the Sprint store is now. I have lots of memories of going downtown and shopping at both Hornes and Kaufmans.

That downtown area has had it rough with big retail.

A damn shame.

I worked for BNY Mellon in the Citizens Bank building across the street for about 6 months. Went into that Macy's once. Place was in bad shape.

Meh, something else will move in, and no one will ever get rid of the clock. No biggie.

I occaisonally buy clothes in there, but far more often I get one of those icing filled cookie sandwiches at the bakery.

Ha, one of the first times we drove through Pittsburgh on way to the inlaws in Canada, we stopped to go to a Pirates game. At some point during the game, my not quite toddler youngest son had a horrendous diaper blowout during the game. My wife and mother in law bought him a new onesie there after the game.

Don't think I ever set foot in that place when I actually lived in Pittsburgh though...I was a Ross Park/Monroeville Mall kinda guy. :pop:

Back in the early 80's when we lived in the north hills we shopped either downtown or the northern lights shopping center in Conway.

That was the first thing that went through my mind.

I read earlier that they were going to close some of the floors but stay open. I guess they are closing for good.

The former flagship of the Kaufmann’s chain has been sold to Philadelphia-based Core Realty, which is planning to turn the 13-story building into apartments and a hotel.

Oh good.

Serious question. Are apartments sitting vacant?

I'm over by Point State Park area of the city and I see a ton of younger people coming in and out of the apartments over there. Obviously most are students. There are also more younger people I work with that live downtown.

But I live in the subburbs and don't plan on moving, so I never looked into having an apartment/condo downtown. So I don't know if there is an overabundance of them. They keep building them, so I always assumed there was demand.

Relative to the world, this is a cheap apartment:

Yea, the demand must not be there.

There's just something about shopping at a big downtown department store that's a different experience from a cookie cutter mall. Except for in the largest cities, downtown department stores are almost extinct today.

They closed the Macy's in Houston last year and bulldozed it.

When I move back to Pittsburgh we plan to live downtown. So, part of me is "yay!, more apartments" but the other part of me is "Boo, nothing to do downtown now." Just waiting for the dog to die and my wife to graduate before we can switch to apartment life.

I disagree with that. I think downtown life is getting better and better. I've been working downtown for the better part of 10 years, and it has transformed significantly, for the better, during that time.

I honestly don't know, which is why I plan to find out by moving there. ;)

I was just saying that in this particular case I'm not sure if more apartments downtown is worth losing something like a department store. When I said 'nothing' I was just conveying that I can't have both a cheap apartment and things to do if everything turns into housing.
