Time is undefeated.

Steve Jordan is a good substitute though.

Rap.

I never was really into it, but I’m shuffling through Spotify playlists in my car a lot lately and California Love has come on a few times. What a track.

Do kids listen to that and really go, “nah…give me the new stuff”? Is there more nuance here where 2Pac is like The Rolling Stones to my generation where youngsters say, “yes. It’s fine. But it’s not for me”?

I guess every generation goes through this and now it’s our turn. But I don’t get it. The subject matter…the talent…the intensity. These days everything seems so casual and self aggrandizing*. That style is appealing?

* I know rap has always been 90% just meta commentary about how great you are, but it’s just less authentic now.

I have teenagers who listen almost exclusively to hip-hop. There is definitely a hierarchy, and lots of competition between artists and their fans. I remember the hair metal fans losing their **** when grunge/alternative music started replacing Poison, Motley Cure, etc. on the radio and MTV rotations. My younger son likes a very specific group of rappers and tolerates some of the other modern artists. My older son appreciates 2Pac, Run-DMC, and Tribe Called Quest and other “legacy” hip hop acts. He loves The Chronic and Straight Outta Compton, but I would say that current artists like Travis Scott, Kanye, Kendrick Lamar “speak” to him more than rap that was composed 20+ years ago.

And again, he’s a middle class white kid that’s grown up in rural SC, so he doesn’t have a lot in common with any of these dudes.

Love Kendrick, hate Kanye, Late 80s, early 90s is the Golden Age for me.

90s rap is my favorite. Top 3 genre for me. I agree with Gaucho, I can appreciate Kendrick Lamar even if I enjoy the older sound more.

Is it consensus that Ad Rock was the most essential Beastie Boy or am I jumping to a conclusion here?

I never thought of them as separate performers.

Two of the worst vocalists ever... I listened to a bit of the actual performance and as soon as the vocals kicked in.. awful just awful.

I'm not a fan of Springsteen but his voice actually works for this tune.

Love me some Phoebe, but that sounds like the outro to a Grey’s Anatomy episode.
