Rage was awesome.

Unfortunately, they inspired a wave of (c)rap rock that was substandard.

I had a chance to see Rage/House Of Pain in early 93 in Tijuana but passed it up. I was flying out somewhat early that next morning, and I'm sure the Navy would have not been happy had I missed my flight to Norfolk. In hindsight, a wise choice. 42 year old JS can easily speak for how responsible 19 year old JS wasn't.

This might be one of the earliest RATM performances on the internet

They played a release party show at the El Rey theater down the street from my office when I was at EMI. (They were on Sony, but it was common practice to send comp tix to people at other labels) Office manager put them up for raffle, first to reply to the email got the tix. I was first, and was told to come down and collect them. Between her telling me to come get my tickets, and me walking the 50-odd feet across the office, a VP had come in and simply took the tickets.

Sad face.

I thought he couldn't drum anymore, because of his shoulder?

Landing page at Foo Fighters dot com has been replaced with a countdown and background walla. I'm guessing it's an announcement of Sonic Highways 2.0.

Not interested, unless he's drumming.

Ready to learn to play guitar? Looks like a nifty gift item just in time for the holidays.

If I were just learning how to play guitar nowadays, I think I'd prefer watching the thousands of "guitar lesson" videos on YouTube over something like that - especially given how pricey those seem to be. That's just me, though.

I've been playing around on my wife's guitar trying to learn to play. Youtube videos are my favorite resource. I tried the Yousician thing one time and thought the structure made 0 sense.

I wish YouTube was around when I started, because it certainly would have helped speed up things (I was taking weekly guitar lessons at a local store at the time). I like the GuitarForce.com content on YouTube the most. That guy does a lot of stuff that I love that I wouldn't consider popular (Death, Sepultura, etc.), and the format he uses is pretty cool.

I use Songsterr for some things. It's basically MIDI TAB. You see what to play tab-wise and can play along with it.

And that price factor is magnified when you consider the YouTube vids are free.

I highly doubt this happens, but if it did, I'd shell out a shitload of money to see them.

I use Ultimate Guitar and paid for a 'pro' upgrade. They have user contributed tabs that also have bass, drum and keyboard parts for many of the songs transcribed.

I used to think keyboards were lame, but bands like Children of Bodom and Dimmu Borgir made me do a 180. And then I came across this girl, who nails pretty much all of my favorite metal - on a keyboard, no less:

On a somewhat-related note, Rob Scallion does some outstanding covers using oddball instruments, too:

I played the tapping part to 'Eruption' on a cello once, that was fun.
