Sure, it would be great to see them with a modern offense. But they gotta play the hand they're dealt. When plays are there to be made, make them.

But you do realize that with a capable OC, “making plays” suddenly becomes much easier right? Hard to “make a play” when the defense knows exactly what you’re trying to do.

Kenny was not good today. Period. Bad reads, bad decisions. Im biased and love the guy from Pitt, but he was poor.

Canada's play calling is still trash, and they ran into a buzzsaw defense after believing their own hype from the preseason. Both things can be true.

Purdy just has it IMO. I watched every minute of every game he played last year and this year. He processes things so quickly. He mentally just has what you need in a QB. He knows exactly where to go with the ball at the right time.

He doesn't have the biggest arm but he is almost always 100% of the time going to make the right read. Shanahan also is a great HC/OC with the play calling obviously...and he has weapons. In any event I'm 10000% confident I'm him being the 49ers QB for the next decade. He just has "it".

TJ Watt is still a monster and was the only good thing for the Steelers today.

I’m not giving up on Kenny. I’ve seen enough good from him to know it’s there, just needs to find it more often than today’s Kenny.

I think Purdy has proven to be perfectly capable. Ultimate question is how high is the ceiling. I also think Pickett in a 49ers uniform would be putting up similar performances, but instead he's dealing with three recovers running four yard routes that result in all three of them standing within five feet of each other (and in today's case missing all three of them).

I’m with c2i. Football is too scripted to cross your arms and say “nah they need just to make plays.” They ran a jet sweep on the second play of the game. The only shock there was that it wasn’t the first play of the game. The game plan stinks. The execution wasn’t good

Kenny's problem today was the few times there was a play to be made today...he didn't make those either.

He's not as bad as he showed today obviously, but he was bad even taking into consideration the play calling.

Purdy is okay to pretty good. He's not gonna win you games, but he doesn't need to with that roster. He's what the browns thought baker could be, but he's actually smart. They do a great job of giving him manageable situations and he makes the right play almost all the time. I don't think he'd thrive in a situation like the Steelers with an okay line and no run threat, but he's not in Pittsburgh.

Also the niners lost week 1 last year to the Bears, and the Steelers beat the Bengals last year week 1, so I'm not making any season predictions after this one. Throw it away and beat Cleveland. Everyone stunk but was really disappointed with the defense outside of TJ. Which CB was pretending to cover Aiyuk?

Also of note...if you believe in weird things holding true no team that has played the 49ers have won the following week in like forever.

I think it was all of 2022...if you played the 49ers one week you were guaranteed to lose the following week. Just a weird quirky stat.

Ulf is right though it's week one. Weird things happen that's not always indicative of the season.

In any event I'll take the dominating victory and hope the Steelers beat all the other nfc west teams this year.

I just am kind of done with the Tomlin train too. If they don't get to the playoffs, or they get bounced again. I'd really like to see a change of page and get a guy that's an offensive coach.

I'm talking about the plays that are there as schemed, not creating more opportunities through better offensive design. Plays where the QB misses open receivers by two clear strides, or where they throw the ball a yard out of bounds instead behind the ear hole of the defender.

This is just like the beginning of last year. The OC is awful and stuck in the pre-2010s with their design and gameplan, I get that. But there are still multiple times a game where that outmoded offense produces opportunities, and today the execution was not on point.
