So first team is scary. Lot of great supplemental pieces. Herbig looks really good.

This is the most excited I've been for a Stillers season in a while. I'm ready to be disappointed.

I'm excited. I don't think they are a SB contender but a lot of really interesting positions on the team to watch this year. Could be very good soon if some of those turn out to be the real deal

What was the deal with the Steelers backfield in the 70's...?

Did Rocky Bleier come into the game as a like a change of pace back? Or like a 1B guy?

Or was Franco actually a fullback as we came to know it and blocked for him, but also got a ton of carries himself...? What's the general feel?

I know the term "fullback" changed a lot over the years - like Jim Brown is technically a FB.

I don't know the answer to that but there are some full-length games on Youtube:

I watched that one a few months ago.

He played one year as a utility back before he was drafted and volunteered for duty in Vietnam. He was shot in the leg and his right foot was mangled by a grenade blast; he couldn't even really walk normally for a year or more after his return stateside. As I remember the story he was sort of a fringe/special teams guy - I think he was even waived at least once - for a couple years as he worked through his rehab and built himself back into being a running back again. He had one 1,000-yd season, which was wildly out of synch with the rest of his career, but it was a year Franco Harris also had 1,000 yds, so that's neat.

That said, he's the only offensive player whose name I have ever worn on my back. (The ultimate show of respect, obvi) I read his book as a kid, he spoke at my high school a couple times. He's a legit hero of mine. But, yeah, he was primarily a blocking back, and was frankly a bit of a fumble monster early and late in his career.

Thanks tif. Just for clarity, your last paragraph is about Rocky, right? If so, that would suggest that Rocky was more of a FB for Franco than the other way around?

Oh for sure. Franco was the guy, had like 6 or 7 consec 1,000-yd seasons. Rocky was the supporting cast, lead blocker/FB type.

Yeah, I'm not sure I would call them a Superb Owl team yet either, but man are they closer than I thought they'd be this time last year.

I'm tempering my excitement mostly because the AFC North might be brutal, and the AFC overall is tough.....
...but if they stay relatively healthy and Kenny progresses, they are going to be very tough to beat week in and week out. I'll take that after really thinking they were entering a rebuilding span before the draft last year.

And if a couple things go their way, they have the talent to make a run.
