Thinking about trying my hand at golf. Any suggestions on a decent, yet affordable set of (lefty) clubs to pick up?

Really when you're just getting into golf, it's not about the clubs, it's about getting your swing right.
this is true in the sense that if you spend 1200 on a set of irons, you arent going to be a scratch golfer automatically; however, there are certain clubs you definitely should not buy as a beginner.

you are going to want something with a wide sole which will help when you chunk one. also, you will want a larger face to increase the sweet spot on ****. that also helps with the weight distribution when you are trying to come around on the ball and also with elevation. i would also look for a set that has hybrids for the long irons. this will make it much easier on you.
Oh for sure... don't start out of the gates buying blades. There are essentially 3 different "types" of clubs in most manufacturer's inventory: Max game improvement (that's what you want silentom), game improvement, and then the better players (tour) irons. Things like Adams IDEA, Cobra Baffler, Mizuno JPX EZ... all good for max game improvement irons.

Awesome, thanks for all the tips gents! :thumb: Also, (and this may be a stupid question) is there any difference in the length of the clubs? Meaning, I'm 6'2" and don't want to end up with something thats not right for me. :?:

I'm 6'5" and I have a little bit longer clubs, but I've hit my friends clubs before and they're all standard, and it works out just fine.

and i used to take 3/4" off my driver too but now that i play less its not worth the effort. i like shorter clubs. less opportunity for it to go somewhere it shouldnt during a swing

Ian Poulter's twitter game is strong, so I am rooting for him.

Early thoughts:

Tom Watson shoots a first-round 71. It's obviously only one round, but he has to be the most consistent golfer into senior citizenry that I can ever remember.

Phil bogeyed 6 and 7, and then promptly eagled 8. Back to -2

Is it me, or is Charley Hoffman always at or near the top of the leaderboard after the first round of majors?

Brutal back nine for Poulter so far has him six shots back.

How did Mike Weir ever win a major?

My favorite thing about majors is when shad gets super pumped about Tom Watson playing well over the first 27 holes then falls back

I use my driver maybe 2 or 3 times a round. It isn't worth it for me. Unless it is an unusually long par 5 or 4, I'm hitting 3 wood or 2 hybrid.

I made it very clear I don't expect him to do anything. It's still impressive for a 66 year old man to be in contention to make the cut at nearly every major.

Tom Watson's antics at the Ryder Cup really made me sour on him.

Tiger should be on the course now. My productivity at work is about to fall from near zero to subzero.

Same. Sucks too because he was one of my favorites before that.

3-putt bogey for TW and he's off to a rip-roarin' start. Can't bogey em all if you don't bogey the first!! (I should know, I do it a lot)
