Several Pitt football players and UTEP basketball coach Joe Golding and his family found themselves in a real-life version of the holiday classic "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" on Christmas Day after flight cancellations left them stranded in Dallas before embarking on a road trip more than 600 miles long.

Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi told reporters on Monday at the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas, where the Panthers will be playing No. 18 UCLA on Friday, that Samuel Okunlola, Jake Frantl and Hudson Primus were stranded when they bumped into Golding, who was in a similar predicament trying to get home to El Paso.

"Joe Golding, head basketball coach at Texas-El Paso here in town ... him and his wife and child, they picked up and took our three guys and drove them because the flight was delayed to get them here for practice," Narduzzi said. "They got here late last night. Just want to give a shoutout to those guys."

Nard dog is basically what this program needs. Gives us plenty of fodder to dodint about while still putting together some respectable performances. I don't really like him but I recognize he's done pretty well here.

Should be interesting to see how he does in a divisionless acc

Pat fits Pitt. As long as he doesn't pull a Nothwestern Fitzgerald I'm fine with him sticking around for a bit.

Depth chart thoughts, not that any of that really matters...

1. Haba being listed was a bit unexpected. PL board is still skeptical as to whether he plays because he was hurt and he accepted the Senior Bowl invite, but I guess we'll see.

2. Last ride of the Patti Wagon. Let's go.

3. Hammond listed as the definitive starter at RB as expected.

4. Two walk-on wideouts in the top six. Awesome.

5. How in the hell is Jason Collier just a junior? I know the Covid year effs with everything but it feels like he's been on the roster since the Walt Harris era.

6. Not reading too much into Donald, Fitzsimmons, and Ford not being listed. I think we'll at least see Donald play on Friday and based on some comments made by the coaches after the season ended regarding players moving on, it wouldn't surprise me to see all three.

7. Kyle Louis at LB could a player to watch. I remember a few people on PL talking him up quite a bit as a hidden gem of the 2022 class, and he had apparently battled some injuries this year.

8. McIntyre slots into the SS role vacated by Brandon Hill. McIntyre's already a decent player; I think he's going to turn out to be really good over these next couple of years.

Kyle Louis is two inches shorter than me and weighs the same as me. Gonna go out on a limb and suggest those aren't the physical attributes of a division I linebacker

Nice to see some of the older guys realize their opportunities for competitive football are limited and not every scrub needs to prepare for the draft.

- WR is vomit. We need transfers.
- OL is potentially in a better starting spot than I realized.
- Surprised to see Hubs. Who of Bentley, Danielson, and Green can return? I would like the depth but also want the young guys to stick around and play.
- Regarding the young DL, I agree on not reading too much into them not being listed. There are some unlisted guys who have gotten more playing time than listed guys all season long.

Also, looks like Sam Scarton has decided to move on with his life's work.

there was a comment a while back about who was the worst Pitt qb in recent history. I was looking around for a guy I remember named Presley or something like that and saw that a name the depth chart that was the same as one of coworkers. and turns out that it was the same guy, not sure if he was a walk-on or what, but I had no recollection of him as a player, so he must not have gotten any time.

Maybe, maybe not. PSN article from the summer tells me he was a high school track star and was trying to get up to 215 during his freshman season. If he was able to add weight and maintain his speed he could fill that hybrid safety/undersized linebacker role Narduzzi uses.

David Priestley & John Turman were the two QBs in the late 1990s that bridged the gap between Pete Gonzalez and the Rod Rutherford/Tyler Palko era. They threw almost all of their passes to either Latef Grim or Antonio Bryant, as one would. If I remember correctly, Turman was mostly a Bostick/Max Browne-esque pocket-passer, and Priestley was more mobile. Turman was frustrating. Priestley I remember being actually somewhat decent.

If we're looking strictly at QBs that started more than one game, rock bottom for me was Kevan Smith in 2007. He got forced into action when Stull hurt his hand against Eastern Michigan in the opener and he was just not good. That was the same year Shady almost carried them to a win by himself against Michigan State; Smith was so ineffective that game, they ended up running McCoy out of the wildcat almost the entire game and damn near won it.

Bostick took over as a true freshman the next week. Smith actually went on to have a pretty decent career in baseball and is still an active MLB catcher.

I think Joey Yellen started two games at Pitt so I'd put him on there. Maybe Max Browne, too.

Yes the Walt era qb progression was

Pistol pete
Matt Lytle
Preistley/Turman
Rod
Palko

Imo Bostick and Smith were the worst two of the "modern" era of pitt fb

Tino is the worst. Sure some were worse in small sample sizes (Nucc, Browne, etc). But Tino started every game for like half a decade and had 0 improvement. With good players all around him too. So painful

He was also like a big local get (was he a wanstedt recruit)

I agree with that, Tino was the worst against expectations

Good ole Kevan Smith. A QB so bad he abandoned the sport and proceeded to make a couple million dollars and 4+ years of service time toward his MLB pension. Hell of a career decision on his part.

Looking back, I completely agree with this. He may not have statistically been the worst, but his inability to sustain drives with any sort of consistency absolutely crushed those teams he quarterbacked. The same thing happened with Slovis this year, to be honest. This past year was the most frustrated I've been watching Pitt's offense since Tino was here.

I don't think Tino ever had a fourth quarter comeback.
