I mean, a robot would be the guy elon musk dressed up as a robot for his demonstration. This would be some signal to the ump telling him if the pitch is a ball or strike. One would never be able to tell the difference, except the calls would be correct all the time.

there's a human element to the game that I genuinely enjoy. I love getting mad at umpires for a shitty call or commending a catcher for a good frame. Players and coaches arguing balls and strikes is as much a part of the game as the seventh inning stretch or home runs.

takes away some of the romanticism of the game imo

All bad takes. I'm all for 100% calls to be accurate and that other stuff is fluff that gets in the way fun or not.

Be careful what you wish for is my anticipation that something will come of this that wasn't to be expected and maybe not in a good way. Gut feeling, nothing more.

I'm conflicted on this. Of course I'm all for no bad calls. But it's gonna mess something else up I'm sure. There will be delays or miscommunications or something that will suck. So I'm not sure if that will suck less than what we have now or not

Like imagine the ump waiting to register what the device is telling them and then making the call. Even if it's a second or two to process and verbalize. That might be lame. Also the actual strike or strikeout call itself loses some luster. I'm all about ending the ump show but basically being notified that you just struck out looking by a computer seems lame

I have to imagine that a home plate umpire will still be necessary, as there will always be a chance for a play at the plate no matter the situation. So just have the ump (and the TV fans) the only ones privy to the balls and strikes from the computer, and let him Enrico Pallazo the balls and strikes.

I am basically in the same place. It’s not like implementing replay has been a unambiguous success. I dont know how they would actually implement the automatic strike zone, but romantic notions of umpires making the wrong call 12 times a game is weird. And whatever that New Yorker article proceeded to go on about was definitely going to be stupid

Yes. And until this use it like they're doing to grade umps after games but harshly deal with umps that make too many mistakes. Is that happening now? I haven't kept up with mlb baseball. And of course it will eventually lead to that one big mistake in the world series which will force the automation.

Other changes that are needed and this was in a George Will column a few months ago:

--Infielders can't position themselves outside of the infield
--Teams must have two players to the left and right of second base

The shift is another reason baseball sucks to watch now.
