you don’t slide into someone’s ankle when you’re 20 feet from the bag

you can still do damage to an ankle
MLB
As evidenced by him shaking the 2B hand and no one on the field really giving a sht. His options were either run into the tag and get doubled up, run out of the baseline and get doubled up, or go down and avoid a tag long enough for the runner to get to first before 2B tags you to get doubled up. No harm no foul imo

The fielder is coming in to get the ball, momentum going towards Machado. Machado slows and decides to go down, spikes extended in his “slide.” He could’ve just stopped and ducked down and it would’ve been the same result without risk of injury. It’s not an awful play, but it’s also not the best way to do it.

I know what you're saying. I think as a baseball player, the "go down while running" instinct is just to slide. That's why it looked so awkward I think. He was halfway between trying to go down like you mention and just instinctively sliding. At least no one got hurt

Machado is a POS, but that's a pretty clean play. As willeyeam stated, he didn't have many options that weren't 'give myself up’ and allow the DP. He even slows down and kinda more rolls than slides. Actually looks a little like a normal Polanco slide. As evidenced by him shaking the 2B hand and no one on the field really giving a sht. this is a weak argument. I’m not saying he didn’t do the “smart” baseball move. He put another player in danger by sliding into his ankle. And Machado has already lost the benefit of the doubt by being a piece of **** in previous incidents

Last thing I'll post on it. No one in baseball has an issue with it

Relative to the machado thing, I don’t think he was trying to spike him. I do think he was trying to break up the Play to first which any base runner should do. It was an awkward bail out - the type of slide for someone who forgot they were supposed to slide and usually breaks the runners ankle. If he wanted to spike him he would have

Ohtani leads the league in home runs and has a 2.14 ERA
good damn he’s good at baseball. I’m glad the Angels are unleashing him. I really hope he stays healthy
