A 24 pack of Yuengling is 13.99 in North Carolina. I'm certain a 12 pack in Pittsburgh is like 10.99.

Goes to show how backwards PA is.

Had the peanut butter and jelly porter yesterday. Meh. But while I was drinking it I could not get the "Peanut butter Jelly Time" song out of my head.

Beerfest was most excellent. I think going on Friday is key. I'll post more tomorrow when I can gather my thoughts better.

So now these Root Beers are the new Fireball?

Not Your Father's Root Beer is all over Facebook with people bragging when they locate the hard to find beverage.

Coney Island Hard Root Beer is the challenger.

Sampled both at a trade show on Thursday. The rep explained the Fathers is an ale with root beer flavor added and it has 5.9% and they have 10% and 18% versions that he swears taste the same (I call shenanigans.) The lower availability is a result of a small brewery, however they've been acquired by Pabst and production should increase greatly.

Coney is a root beer with malt liquor added.

I think both have the potential for trouble. You're going to have kids drinking them like soda and with the high sugar and increased ABV, you're going to see a mess.

But if you like root beer and are responsible, you'll enjoy both.

I went to look for that stuff last night since everybody was making a big deal about it. Got sidetracked and never found it. If Fathers tastes anything like Sprechers, then I'm not interested.

Father's is better. We made beer floats after a beer tasting one night and you could hardly tell there was alcohol in it. Not sickly sweet like Sprechers.

So I had the Oak Aged Chocolate Yeti, 120 Minute IPA, Noble Rot, Red Sky at Morning and Double Crooked Tree IPA out of the VIP beers.

DFH wins hands down there... Both were excellent.

The Yeti was good, but really the exact opposite of what I want to be drinking on a hot summer night.

Other 2 were just ok.

One of the big hits with my group was at the Belgian booth, they were mixing Lindemann's Framboise w/ Crabbie's Lemon to make "raspberry lemonade". A bit on the sweet side, but really good if you like that kind of thing.

Whoever decided to put Draai Laag and Arsenal side by side... They are awesome. Got to follow up Simon Girty with some Fighting Elleck... Good times.

My favorite moment of the night was witnessing Froggy's beer epiphany when he tried Golden Monkey.

Unlike the winter fest where 80% of what I wanted to try was out or not even there, I got to try every beer I specifically looked for and more.

My only complaint is that Berlin Street Foods wasn't there this year.

I am definitely sticking to friday sessions for now on.

Boy, Smuttynose Spank is great. At $7.99 I will definitely get this again. "A butt-smackingly delicious hoppy saison ale." This is a very good summer beer choice. Grapefruit and black pepper combo, lovely prickly carbonation. Yum.

Any time this gentleman goes to rivertowne, kenny the kangaroo looks at the beer list and imagines how indignant the troy loney must have been when he got his unibroue in a solo cup.

is it me or did they really seem to load up on the high ABV beers this time? Seemed like half of the stuff I tried was above 8%, and it wasn't like I was specifically seeking them out. Towards the end of the night, it felt like it was challenge to find something that was even in the low 5's.

I tried that Not Your Father's Root Beer at my father-in-law's, and was ready to love it. Sorry, it's terrible. It is way, way too sweet, which I am assuming they use to mask the alcohol content. Gross, and a rare drain pour for me.

Fleur de Houblon tonight. An all time favorite.
I bought an Ommegang variety yesterday--Hennepin, Fleur de Houblon, Rare Vos, Witte. I was really pumped to crack into it, and then the first FdH I had had a strong green bottle skunk flavor. Thankfully, the next one was okay. I don't even mind green bottle skunk after touring a bunch of Fantome stuff over the years, but I was happy to get an on-point Fleur, for sure. Great summer beer.
