Going to hit up a few of the "Farm Beer" places in Maryland this weekend. Many of them look really nice. Hopefully the brews will match.

BEER

Postby the wicked child » Thu Jan 12, 2017 2:54 pm

Had a pleasant beer experience yesterday. Out of nowhere at work, a fellow employee walked into my office with an Alchemist Focal Banger and said his neighbor brought him back a 6 pack and asked if I ever had or would like 1. Obviously yes and it was delicious. Everytime I get to check one of these bucket list beers off, I'm reminded of how good we have it with some local breweries doing awesome stuff and the ease of access of some good stuff. A couple years ago, this would have been one of the best beers you could get your hands on and while it's still amazing, it's more common with the great quality we are surrounded by. I don't know why I typed all of that, I should of just said it's awesome.

So then later at the grocery store I take a gander of what we got and see Big Bad Baptista and was like whaaaaaaat?

Image

so got 4 of those and 4 regular BBB for a lovely weekend!
How does one sign up for this awesome life where people just walk up to you with great beer and say here ya go?

I've noticed it works with the following 2 steps:

1. Talk about beer
2. Give someone else great beer, they'll return the favor or they no longer get great beer.

Victory Sour Monkey available in cases in 12 oz. bottles now. Also came out with a 21st Birthday Celebration IPA. Malt is pils and carapils, and then hops are chinook, centennial and mosaic. Should be nice and crisp with piney and citrusy flavor based on their description.

Glad that they released 12oz bottles of Sour Monkey. It was good, but 750.L was way too much of a good thing, imo. 12oz is pretty much perfect.

New Holland Dragon's Milk... for a $7 bomber at Costco, not a bad beer.
One of my favorites... that's a pretty good price, too.

Last night I tried Arcaida Loch Down Scotch Ale. It was decent, but I'd rather drink Old Chub.

Tonight, I tried Bruery Terreux Frucht: Cherry. Was not impressed. It's listed as a berliner weisse, but reminded me more of a gose. And it we're talking a cherry gose, give me Victory Kirsch Gose any day over this. There just wasn't much flavor there... some sourness, some salt, and a very faint cherry flavor.

My wife had a bought a bottle earlier in the week, and I had to stop there so I had picked up 2 more. And a bottle of Ballast Point's Mocha Marlin. It wasn't bad, but the New Holland was better. Their other selections included the South Street Anastasia Chocolate Stout, Dogfish Head's Red & White (or could have been the other way around), and Founders with a Blueberry-laced beer that I wasn't about to spend $15 on. (If it wasn't blueberry, probably would as very little Founders has done has disappointed me - just one to this point, and that was their Red's Rye IPA last weekend --- but I think the blueberry would have been much worse)

That tangerine quad was pretty tasty, although I wish it had been more distinctly citric.

Good purchase, but not again at $15 for a bomber.

On Saturday, tried Bruery Terreux Wiki Wiki Tart, via @BigMcK

This was better than the one I tried on Friday, though not spectacular by any means. It smelled of vinegar, mostly. Taste wise, it was a mix of sour and tart. It was decent, not great. Not sure how much I noticed ths specific hibiscus or passion fruit it promises.

Unlike Grimm, I was not really impressed with either beer from these guys. Unlikely to try anything else from them.

Yard's Brawler is a fantastic, easy-drinking beer. Only 4.2% so a nice session beer, but packs flavor typically oriented with higher ABVs. One of my favorites.

Anyone ever had O'Dells Mountain Standard? 9.5 abv, says it's a double black IPA. Pretty dang tasty

Stone Ripper... eh? label says juicy, I was expecting juicy. smells nice!

Firestone Walker Helldorado - damn good BA barleywine, I have yet to have a bad barrell beer from them, so good

Big Bad Baptista - it's BBB with vanilla, mexican coffee, cocoa, and cinnamon... and it's awesome

Southern Tier Raspberry White is pretty good, but Founders Rubaeus is the only raspberry beer that I've had that didn't taste artificial.

I think way too many breweries are trying to hop (lol, hop...) onto the juicy bandwagon and just not delivering.

The only thing I've had in recent memory that I would call "juicy" was the blood orange cider I had in Cincy last year. And before that, Fresh Squeezed IPA.

Ever other hop bomb that is called "juicy" just gets overpowered by hops.

I think Gen. Braddock's IPA from Brew Gentleman is a quintessential "juicy" IPA that you could sample locally... but I don't think you're in Pittsburgh, so nevermind.

Brew gents is what I think of for juicy ipas. I'm actually surprised it hasn't caught on more, but they are doing it the best with ease of access as far as I'm concerned. My local brewery does a decent one and insurrection ales was pretty good too, but I still make the hour drive regularly to BG for world class quality.
