I’m still stunned by the nuking of his own future that Ford pulled off. I had no issue with his decision to leave the team, but to do nothing to prepare yourself for the future after making that decision? Way to be a walking red flag.

Less egregious, but DJ Turner also made a mistake. He was always a complete long shot to be drafted. Returning for another season gets him another degree and a season of being Pitt’s best receiver on tape.

Awesome. Jones, Weaver, and especially Twyman went much later in the draft than they should have.

I'm not sure if it was posted above, but in addition to Ford with the Rams and Kessman with the Chargers, DJ Turner signed a free agent deal with the Raiders and Bryce Hargrove got one with Atlanta.

All in all, six draftees plus four free agent deals is a pretty solid weekend for the program. I'd have loved to have seen Jones, Weaver, and Twyman go earlier than they did, but it's still good nonetheless.

Pitt finished tied for 10th in terms of number of draft picks by school with 6th. Maybe you can chalk this up to the pandemic, but those 10 teams with 6 or more picks were all over the place. Pitt, Penn State, LSU, Kentucky, Michigan were all medicore. Georgia, Clemson, Alabama, Notre Dame, Florida were all good. LSU Kentucky and Penn State all had good 2019 seasons though. Pitt and Michigan were ho hum in both 2019 and 2020.

Agree. This is where I'd love to be in the room with some of the scouts to pick their brains about how they evaluate these guys, particularly how they balance measurables/Pro Day workouts versus what they see on tape/how these players actually produce in college. This draft presented a really interesting case study to me with Jayson Oweh, Jones, and Weaver.

Jones was ridiculously consistent as a two-year starter - 43 tackles, 12 TFLs and 8.5 sacks in 2019 (with no Weaver on the other side), and then 44 tackles, 13 TFLs, and 9 sacks last year. I'll even throw in his 2018 numbers - 23 tackles, 7.5 TFLs and 4 sacks - because it's fun to point out that he pretty much matched Hendrix's production that year despite playing half the snaps.

Weaver had 47 tackles with 14 TFLs and 6.5 sacks in 2018, and then 35 tackles, 14.5 TFLs and 7.5 sacks in 9 games in 2020.

Keep in mind that Weaver's and Jones's 2020 numbers came in games played almost entirely against ACC teams.

Jayson Oweh had no sacks last year in seven games. While he did have 38 tackles and 6.5 TFLs, Oweh's career TFL (13.5) and sack (7) totals fall below what Jones/Weaver each produced in one season.

Oweh went as projected - a first-round pick - largely because his measurables and Pro Day numbers are off the charts and it all had scouts salivating. I know that both Jones and Weaver didn't post elite-level 40 times in their Pro Days, but their workouts weren't necessarily bad. It's just strange to me to see guys who produced in actual games the way those two did at a P5 level for as long as they did fall to the 3rd/5th round, while Oweh gets a first-round grade almost entirely because his workout numbers were so explosive.

I think Pinnock is a perfect example of too much focus on pro day/combine performance. I’m happy for him, but to me his game tape is not that of an NFL CB but damn did he kill it at the Pro Day. He rocketed up draft boards while guys with fantastic game tape and mediocre (or in Ford’s case atrocious) pro days tumbled.
