I was surprised when I saw this. Read somewhere that they have the fewest assistant coaches too. What gives?

That’s actually more comforting than learning Fitchner and Butler are highly paid.

I have always been infatuated with coaching trees which made me think of Tomlin's. Does he even have one, or is it a shrub?

I think it's Bruce Arians

Bruce Arians is the only branch on his shrub and even that feels like a bastardization of the coaching tree idea.

To re-emphasize a previous gripe of mine about the nepotism that has helped construct the current coaching staff:
Early in Tomlin's coaching career he spent two seasons at Arkansas State. In 1997 he was their WR coach while Fichtner was their offensive coordinator. In 98 he was moved to DB coach under newly hired defensive coordinator Keith Butler. Tomlin was also a grad assistant at Memphis in 96 when Butler was close to the end of his tenure as their LB, DE, and ST coach. These two buffoons gave Tomlin his first paying jobs as a football coach and I don't see him making a change with either unless the entire house is getting cleaned or the decision comes from above.

I knew the nepotism here was bad but not that bad. Reinforces the idea that they just need to rip the bandaid off.

The Lions could be nearing a blockbuster hire at general manager.

According to Mike Stone of 97.1 The Ticket, the team has made an offer to longtime Steelers GM Kevin Colbert -- and Colbert is 'close' to accepting. It's now on Steelers ownership to make a counteroffer to prevent Colbert from leaving.

“I just got off the phone with a trusted source who has told me that the Lions have made an offer to Kevin Colbert, and it’s pretty close to happening,” Stone said Wednesday morning on the Stoney & Jansen Show. “I’m not going to say it’s done or anything like that. Someone I know pretty well, somewhat connected, said that they’ve offered the job to Kevin Colbert, and unless the Rooney's come up with some kind of crazy counteroffer he might be coming back.

Colbert has been on one year deals forever as he weighs retirement every offseason. Things are a mess with this team, but why the **** would he leave home for the Lions? If he leaves they might as well blow the whole thing up and start over.

I would assume he leaves, and Omar steps in.

TIL that coblert worked for the lions before he worked for the stillers.

that doesn't mean that move makes sense for a 64 year old native of pittsburgh

Looking at the situation they're in right now, why would the Steelers fight to keep him? Coaching staff is a dud and the roster is in FA hell.

Tomlin doesn't have a tree because nearly all of the position coaches and coordinators he's had have either been here forever (and so haven't propagated) or came here from elsewhere from someone else's tree. As noted, Arians is sort of the sole exception, and even he was an internal promotion to OC when Tomlin was hired.

Tomlin doesn't have a tree because OC's have always been either picked by Ben or the management lol, and Butler doesn't call the plays, and Lebeau was there before him.

Does Tomlin have any home-grown coaching proteges?

It may be an unpopular opinion, but I don't want Ben's last game to be a playoff blowout against the Browns. That just seems wrong.

Would it be better or worse than them missing the playoffs and his last game being meaningless because he can no longer perform and noodle arms it the entire season?

That's what I said after seeing all the images of he and Pouncey after the game, it feels like Troy and Coach LeBeau's last game being a home playoff loss to BAL. That's just not how it was supposed to end.

Sigh... cut Ben. Let them find out 100% Rudolph isn’t the guy, tank for who knows what QB. Cry.
