How will you be referring to this coming year?

Postby count2infinity » Wed Dec 30, 2020 1:59 pm

I realized Friday is the first day of the year, and I started thinking back about the first two decades of this millennium.

For the year 2009, I referred to it as two thousand (and) nine in most cases, and casually I'd refer to it as "oh nine". For 2019 I'd only refer to it as twenty nineteen. Never just nineteen, and I (we?) oddly made the switch from two thousand to twenty.

My guess is this decade will be twenty twenty something, and casually referred to as twenty something, but we'll see.

This is just year one now. It's like BC and AD. Before covid and after.

I think I'll say twenty twenty one though

Hmm. I don't know if we're far enough in yet to just give it the 21 treatment.

I hate how we have to start differentiating between the “1920s” and “2020s” and can’t just say “the twenties” anymore

Does anyone know someone that graduated from high school in the teens? They might be the ones to ask. If I were asked when I graduated from high school, I would say "oh five". I might have to ask my sister.... she graduated in 2011.

It feels right to casually say "I was born in 87" but not "my son was born in 17".

Maybe the 1900s claimed all the two-digit numbers and now everything is "20" whatever.

Or maybe there's a cutoff point where it sounds right to start using the two-digit versions again. Maybe 21 is it.

My daughter was born in 2018, I defended my Ph.D. in 2016. For both of them I, even casually, say twenty something teen. Never just 18 or 16.

Twenty-twenty-one.

But I pronounce it 'twenny', softening the second t and making it easier to spit out quickly.

When I was little and didn't realize there were year numbers, I asked my mom what will we call "Next Year" when it actually is "Next Year" because then it's not next any more. Some big brain 3 year old stuff

Who cares? This doesn’t even come close to sit or stand to wipe. Who are these savages who don’t look at the toilet paper before flushing it.
