It's easy to joke about it being a relief but having children in this environment has been a mixture of joy in seeing them more and sheer hell thinking about the best way to protect them.

Idk man. This is so **** and there's no end in sight even if this new mutant isn't as big a deal as it sounds like it could be. My family wedding superspreader that put vaccinated people in the hospital **** me up a bit

Pretty much. Arm still a little tender?
A tad. Most went away by about 5pm tonight. Just random chills now.

I don’t want to worry about variants until data comes out. I’m done with anecdotal evidence of horror

when delta first started there was all the fearmongering about kids being more susceptible to it. That’s all but disappeared. Yeah kids might be more susceptible but it’d still extremely rare
Researchers looked for signs if delta is causing more severe disease. Both studies found statistically similar levels of severity before and after delta was dominant. For instance, about 23% of those hospitalized were admitted to the intensive care unit in the delta period compared to 27% pre-delta. Likewise, 10% required invasive mechanical ventilation and 2% died in the delta period compared to 6% and 1%, respectively, before delta.

“Although we are seeing more cases in children and more overall cases, these studies demonstrated that there was not increased disease severity in children,” Dr. Walensky said. “Instead, more children have COVID-19 because there is more disease in the community.”
the hospitalization rates for kids was like 1 in 100,000 weekly. So 2% of that is 0.2 kids out of 100k every week. Of course it’s horrifying but kids are likely more likely to get another super dangerous virus

The Los Angeles Fire Department is investigating an incident in which a firefighter “responded inappropriately” after being handed a letter to comply with the city’s vaccine mandate, a department spokeswoman said Wednesday.

The LAFD member responded to receiving the noncompliance letter by dropping his pants and wiping his buttocks with the letter, leaving fecal matter on the document, before dropping it to the ground, according to the Stentorians of Los Angeles City, a group representing African American firefighters.

The situation underscores the deep resistance among some within the Fire Department over the city's mandate that employees be vaccinated.
Quite an understatement.

Safe to say any new variant has already spread around the world before they even identify it.

In good news, merck pill is close to being unleashed

I agree with this, however:

"At this point, implementing travel measures is being cautioned against," Lindmeier told a U.N. briefing in Geneva. "The WHO recommends that countries continue to apply a risk-based and scientific approach when implementing travel measures.
Just stop. Immediate two week moratorium on international flights is the first step, imo.

The thing that concerns me a bit about the virus is how quickly it became the dominant strain in South Africa.

It took delta 75ish days to become 80% of the cases, it took this new variant a few weeks.

But is it more deadly? And what's the vaccination rate in SA? Are they getting the good stuff?

Vaccination rate is in the low 20%.

That’s why I’m not panicking. First off, we don’t know the deadliness of it just yet. Secondly, they have a pretty low vaccination rate.

That said, the people that brought it back to Germany were vaccinated with Pfizer. Initial reports show that it’s an even more mutated spike protein than Delta, and we’ve seen what that can do against our vaccines.

I’m not saying it was nice knowing ya, but this one certainly is more concerning than lambda or mu.

It isn't surprising that area can become a hotbed for virus mutations. Isn't like a fifth of their population HIV+?

Here’s a lady that knows more about this science than me:

https://vm.tiktok.com/TTPd2CHW22/

We’ll see what comes of it. It’s wild to me that we already know exactly what the mutations are, where they’re located in the virus, and what they do. Now, how to combat it?

I just think, man… we know the mutations on the spike protein which means we already know the mRNA code for the cells in our body to produce the new spike protein. Just upload the new sequence and get that vaccine out there. I know it’s not that simple from a regulatory stand point, but it’s pretty darn close to that simple from a vaccine development standpoint.

See, we don't have the market cornered on stupidity:

Anti-Vaxxer Who Attended Covid Party To Catch The Virus Dies From Coronavirus
An anti-vaxxer who attended a ‘COVID-19 party’ seemingly in a bid to catch the virus has died.

The 55-year-old man, who hasn’t been identified, passed away in Austria last week after attending a so-called coronavirus party in the city of Bolzano in South Tyrol, northern Italy.

Three more people have also been taken to hospital and diagnosed with COVID after attending similar events in the region. There’s also been reports of parents taking their children to parties in order to infect them with the virus to build up immunity, with one child said to be hospitalised as a result.
