Today - June 17th, 2021 - I had a lunch that was a salad from a grocery store salad bar that I prepared myself using common utensils for the first time in over 470 days. I wasn't even hungry, I just wanted to make a salad.

Salad bars have been shut down since March 13, 2020. Only pre-packaged grab-and-go items. It's actually one of the weird things I found I missed the most about the Before Times that I want expecting to miss. Just a complete sign of normalcy returning.

Yeah, no salad bars, no olive/antipasti bars, no hot-food bars. Not sure when Giant Eagle is bringing those back. They weren't back as of last weekend.

I’m sure there are worse things than COVID in those salad bars

I do miss the olive bars. Our local Fresh Market gets their stuff directly from Delallo’s, which is outstanding. They have been prepackaging certain items and storing them in the same bar area, but the choices are limited.

No more buffets or salad bars for me. Think of all the unwashed hands on those serving utensils.

Think about all the unwashed hands on:

Elevator buttons
Door handles
Tables
Chairs
Stair rails
The cash you get back as change

I guarantee you there are not any hands on a stripper...

...unless you go to the champagne room

I worked at Blush for a year. You can touch in a room, not on the stage.

But then again there's the tables so I'm sure there's a lot of touching there.

It actually got me wondering... what are the major contributors to green house emissions:

Image

36% is from transportation... so yeah, the lockdown certainly had a huge impact. Obviously not all of that 21% came from that, but a huge chunk probably did.

There were upstream and downstream impacts to the lockdown beyond not driving. Oil demand plummeted, which would have reduced extraction and thus lower emissions.

WSJ has been running some interesting articles on the cost to mine bitcoin. One of the ways china is trying to reduce emissions is to discourage bitcoin mining because it uses too much energy. Iran blamed a bunch of rolling blackouts on mining. Some cops in England thought they were busting up a suspected grow house for weed that ended up being a bitcoin mining operation that was stealing electricity. interesting stuff.

China is kicking out more than half the world’s bitcoin miners – and a whole lot of them could be headed to Texas
