COVID-19

Postby genoscoif » Mon May 17, 2021 9:03 am

Friends just tested positive after being all vaxxed up as they had to get tested to go in to the hospital to have a baby. Absolutely no symptoms. I guess that's a good thing showing vaxx is working, but can you still pass it along if you've been vaxxed?
My understanding is that health officials are pretty sure / confident that you don't spread it, but just can't confirm that yet.
I know that there is still a lot that we're learning as we move thru this, but I'm fine it frustrating that they haven't been able to confirm this yet. Seems like an extremely important piece to the overall puzzle. If you can't/won't spread it once vaxxed, you're completely removed from the equation as far as further risk to yourself or others. You are very much back to pre-covid regardless of what anyone else has done.

I remember hearing or reading a couple months ago that the virus doesn't replicate effectively or efficiently to get to a point where the carrier can shed it, so the thought was that a vaxxed person couldn't 'infect' another, but I haven't seen any more recently.

Would also be interesting to see if the different vaccinations would have different results. Like does J&J allow more replication than Pfizer or Moderna? Still effective at protecting the vaxxed person from serious symptoms, but allows for a higher risk of post vax spreading.

I think it's just that it takes times to be able to confirm these observations.

They are still waiting for the controlled studies to be done to fully confirm the results thus far, but so far the answer seems to be that, yes. The vaccine does limit spread as well as sickness. I think one study was done with AstraZeneca and found 50% less chance of spread from a vaccinated person, and there was a Moderna study that showed even better numbers.

One other thing to keep in mind is that the small, 1 person to 1 person spread isn't the problem. I saw a stat that said 80% of the Covid cases were tracked back to 10% of Covid infected people. There are some people that are doing a lot of damage. Many just get sick, don't pass it on to many people, and move on. The vaccine lowers that number by a lot.

don't think I saw anything on here but Bill Maher tested positive for COVID despite being vaccinated

he's asymptomatic though, which is very good news that even if you have COVID, vaccination assuages the impact of the virus

I'm kind of tired of all these news stories about people catching the virus who are vaccinated. The vaccination is to kill the symptoms/spread.

The vaccines (the good ones anyways...) were found to be ~90-95% effective. I wonder what people think that means.

100% NEVER GOING TO GET IT EVER AGAIN is what it means to a lot of people who don't understand that being "99.9% sure of something" isn't sure of anything.

Yeah, the point of the vaccine (even the flu vaccine) is to prevent severe symptomatic infection(s) to reduce hospital load. Not getting it at all as a result of vaccination is I think technically a side-effect of getting the shots.

At what point can a fully vaccinated individual stop getting tested

What do you mean? I think PA no longer requires any quarantine for vaccinated folks if they've been exposed. They just have to quarantine if they have symptoms.

Right now you only need to get tested if you're symptomatic. My guess is that never goes away similar to how you get tested for the flu even though you were vaxxed. If you go to the doctor when you're sick, the doctor will have you tested.

I do love that flu numbers were on the ground this past winter and rather than thinking just a little bit logically about it: masks and limited crowds and social distancing works really well to stamp out flu, the truthers are out here saying it was just a bad flu season and covid isn't real.

Flu numbers were down because the 500k+ people who died actually had the flu, but the gov't is calling it covid. Get with the program, hippie.

I remember 6-8 months ago in this thread wondering what the impacts of COVID mitigation efforts would be on the impending flu season.

Apparently the department of health got enough inquiries that they sent an update to employers... the mask mandate extends to employees as well. I am no longer required to wear a mask at work as I'm fully vaccinated. I cannot move back to my old desk though, due to guidelines that don't expire until memorial day.

As in if you're not a high risk spreader and you're vaccinated then you shouldn't even be getting a test. I want that day to come so I can stop hearing about viral breakthroughs that did nothing to the vaccinated host.
