Baseball reference is showing that cole tucker played as many innings at shortstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates as kenneth t kanagaroo. i dont think a role at starting shortstop is in the cards for him. also, he can't hit.

RichRod lead the team in wins (?) and jacob stallings was the team MVP. i dont care if the season was 6 games, 60 games, or 600 games, both of those tidbits are outrageous. i could go on, but i wont

Nesbitt had a really good interview with Hurdle for Athletic subscribers. Nothing Earth shattering, just a reminder that Hurdle is good people really

I didn't really blame Hurdle for last year. It was pretty obvious with the clubhouse stuff that he was ready to move on as well.

was wrong. Holy hell was I wrong. This team might win 10 games. They have 2.5 hitters (Bell, Reynolds, Frazier the 3 days of a week he shows up).
The offense was awful, in part because the 2.5 hitters on the team had better things to do for most of the season. Partial credit to myself here. They won 19 games, twice as many as I expected. Yay?
Their catchers might get one hit a week combined.
Stallings gave me the middle finger and was mostly competent with the bat, fading late. Still pretty sure that if he's your starting catcher, you're winning 70 games at most. Murphy was a corpse.

Moran should be in Point State Park with birds crapping on him; instead he's the starting 3rd baseman. You'd like to think that once Hayes tests negative he'd get a lot of playing time, but we all know he'll be nailed to the bench so he watch Moran fail to reach a ball hit 7 inches to his right.
Moran started off well before finding his level and being the mostly average bat we know him to be. He's not great defensively, and he doesn't hit well enough to be a DH. He did have some decent work against lefties. They actually called up Hayes, who is the Prince That Was Promised. Unfortunately they kept playing J.T. Riddle over him for reasons unknown.

Polanco will be terrible for the first 45 games of the year while Brown says it's due to the 'rona; he'll have a great 10 game stretch where he hits .600, then crack a toenail, miss the end of the year and we'll be right back here in 2021 convincing ourselves this is the year he's actually the Chosen One.
Polanco proved me wrong by being terrible all season. He also managed to damn near kill Phillip Evans. Cherington and Shelton continue to back him even though at this point he is who he is. This is your reminder that they could have dealt him and Taillon in 2014 for Giancarlo Stanton and won the World Series that year by hitting boatloads of dingers, but didn't because everyone freaks out about trading prospects. Most prospects turn out to suck. Trade them all for good players, raise the banner, figure the rest out later.
For some reason they are committed to making Tucker a utility player when he's the best defensive shortstop on the roster so Erik Gonzalez can impersonate a major leaguer.
Tucker barely hit, and it's not looking good for him. He's still miscast as an outfielder. Gonzalez had a nice two week stretch before remembering he's bad at baseball. Neither one should be the starting shortstop on a team with aspirations, so they fit in great on the Pirates.
Trevor Williams has somehow parlayed a social media account, awful tattoos and a 2 month stretch where he massively out-performed his perhipherals into making people think he's more than a marginal pitcher.
Got this one spot on. No, his one good start the end of the year doesn't count.
Brault is Williams but left-handed, with an even longer track record of being impossible to watch.
Brault was actually fine this season, which means he'll get another chance this year to remind everyone he's bad.
On the off chance they have a lead their bullpen is made up of guys who I can only assume only get erections by setting baseball games on fire. Crick should be in jail with his buddy Vazquez for stealing money; instead he gets the coveted role of closer even though he sucked last year by not being able to find the strike zone and sucks again because he can't throw strikes.
The bullpen went from awful to reliable to awful, which is impressive in a 60 game season. Miguel Del Pozo might be the worst Pirates pitcher I've seen, and that's saying something. Burdi should probably go pro in something other than sports- if you can't throw more than 5 innings without your arm exploding, it's a bad sign. Crick was a disaster early, disappeared with a broken catalytic converter or some such fake injury, then came back and was barely used. Chalking this up as me being right.
Derek Shelton may be an idiot, but there's no way to know because the roster is bad and should feel bad.
Turns out we could tell he's either an idiot or he was throwing games. Curse me and my optimism.
I of course will watch every inning of every game these idiots play over the next two months.
I didn't watch every inning, but I watched a lot. My wife may have been concerned it was a cry for help.

Hopefully Cherington does something this offseason rather than sit on his hands.

The start of something special squandered away after some bad luck (2 straight WC losses against the best in baseball at the time - Bumgarner and arrieta) and the decision to mail it in after a 98 win season.

Shame he had to suffer another concussion to finally make the decision. Was always a fan and hope his brain isn’t scrambled forever.

That's awesome man. Watching that makes me more sad than anything. It showed that Pittsburgh is a great sports town, and they will support a team that actually gives a sht about winning.

In recent weeks, Ben Cherington had made a series of moves to acquire additional capacity to their 2019-2020 international signing pool. The highest profile trade was sending Jarrod Dyson to the White Sox, but he also sent low-level prospects to the Cardinals and Orioles for their unused space.

On Wednesday, he used that extra room to get a guy that the Pirates had their eye on for a long time, signing 19-year-old Taiwanese pitcher Po-Yu Chen. A source tells DK Pittsburgh Sports that the deal is for $1.25 million.

How much homework have the Pirates done on this young right-hander? Try 25 scouting reports over three years.

"Po-Yu Chen is an exciting young pitching prospect who has been a prominent part of the Taiwanese national program and in International competition," Cherington said. "He has good size, moves well on the mound, and has a quality pitch mix with the ability to keep getting better.
