which is worse: the Star Wars prequels or the Hobbit trilogy?
Tricky question. The prequel trilogy definitely had worse acting and dialogue. But there was never a feeling of scope or size or urgency or anything in the Hobbit trilogy. The actual battle in the Battle of the Five Armies was rather pathetic compared to any battle across all six LOTR/Hobbit films. The annoyingly long pod-race scene was matched by the equally stupid and long barrel ride down the river in the Hobbit.

All in all I have to say that the Hobbit trilogy was worse. First because I have an interest in the Star Wars "universe" so even bad versions are better than nothing. Second, the Hobbit crew should have learned from the failures of the the SW prequel trilogy and done better, which they did not.

I agree with Hobbit: BOTFA being a disappoint fest, but I enjoyed the first two installments to a degree. I think the Hobbit would have been better as a one and done movie though... kind of like, oh I don't know, maybe the BOOK. :!: Nothing good will ever be said about Star Wars prequels, though.

I think the SW prequel trilogy is worse than the hobbit. SW had so much potential because anything could be done with it, but the Hobbit was rather limited on material. I don't think anyone expected the Hobbit to be better than the LOTR trilogy; it was pretty much impossible.

If he thought the dialogue in A New Hope was rubbish, I hope the PT never made it to his afterlife.

Really gotta put yourself in the time period too. Guinness was from the old guard of actors. This sci-fi nonsense probably seemed like a passing fad.

Found these quotes from Alec Guinness as well:
April 16, 1976:
Apart from the money, which should get me comfortably through the year, I regret having embarked on the film. I like them all well enough, but it’s not an acting job, the dialogue, which is lamentable, keeps being changed and only slightly improved, and I find myself old and out of touch with the young.
In his memoir A Positively Final Appearance, Guinness tells the following story:

A refurbished Star Wars is on somewhere or everywhere. I have no intention of revisiting any galaxy. I shrivel inside each time it is mentioned. Twenty years ago, when the film was first shown, it had a freshness, also a sense of moral good and fun. Then I began to be uneasy at the influence it might be having. The bad penny first dropped in San Francisco when a sweet-faced boy of twelve told me proudly that he had seen Star Wars over a hundred times. His elegant mother nodded with approval. Looking into the boy’s eyes I thought I detected little star-shells of madness beginning to form and I guessed that one day they would explode.

“I would love you to do something for me,” I said.

“Anything! Anything!” the boy said rapturously.

“You won’t like what I’m going to ask you to do,” I said.

“Anything, sir, anything!”

“Well,” I said, “do you think you could promise never to see Star Wars again?”

He burst into tears. His mother drew himself up to an immense height. “What a dreadful thing to say to a child!” she barked, and dragged the poor kid away. Maybe she was right but I just hope the lad, now in his thirties, is not living in a fantasy world of secondhand, childish banalities.

Ummmmmmmmmmmm...................................... that's not the Yahoo you're looking for.

'Yahoo' was a play in which SAG starred as Jonathan Swift.

EDIT: Derp, I read your post without knowing the context of the above stuff. My bad.

He wasn't alone; all of the actors thought the dialog was awful. Ford once confronted Lucas (I think on set) saying, "George, you can type this s**t, but you sure has hell can't say it."

It's not like Star Wars was ever about great dialogue and innovative storytelling.
