I've always said I think that's QTs best movie.

Thanks tif, I got way more out of that than I was wondering. Always good stuff

...an Elmore Leonard novel (who writes very lean).
My brain short-circuited here, and I transposed this as James Ellroy. I was like, "L.A. Confidential is like 500 pages and has a sub-plot about Walt Disney's son killing the Black Dahlia. "That's 'lean', stfu."

And yes, Jackie Brown is tragically underrated imo.

Rewatched Jackie Brown (HBO Max) for the first time since the theaters in 1997. Like someone else here said, I really didn't appreciate it as much coming off of Pulp Fiction. Holds up really well, but I remembered very little about it - no recollection of Robert DeNiro or Michael Keaton even in it.

The writing was tighter than most QT scripts, and that's probably because it was adapted from an Elmore Leonard novel (who writes very lean). Michael Keaton reprises his character in another Elmore Leonard novel turned screenplay - Out of Sight. Had no recollection of that either.

I had forgotten completely about Bridget Fonda who hasn't acted since a Hallmark film (!!!) in 2002. She turned down a role on Private Practice or some other big TV drama at the time to focus on movies...and never really worked again. Had a kid with Danny Elfman and basically retired from acting. Odd.
Bridget Fonda on the poster for Point of No Return was one of the first memories I can remember of something being... Awakened in me.

I understand wanting to use the OBC, but dude looks like he's in his mid to late 30s and wearing children's clothes.

By the way this is a trailer that gives away the entire movie, so watch at your own risk.

Looks more out of place than the cast of Rent.

My wife was obsessed with the movie version when we were in college--I can't tell you how many times I heard that stupid song "525,600 minutes".

That said, it did lead to one of my best Christmas presents of all time. Signed movie poster with the entire cast, including Idina whom I believe had just done Frozen.

Rush was very good, and that's coming from someone who knows next to nothing about Formula 1 or watching cars go around in a circle for hours. Seems to be pretty accurate, although Hunt and Lauda actually liked each other a bit more than in the film.

I looked up what happened to some of the other drivers, and Clay Regazzoni died in a minivan crash. To survive a paralyzing crash in an open-wheel race car at 200MPH or whatever, and die in a Dodge Caravan or whatever. Ugh.

Mortal Kombat. It’s what I expected it to be and was very fun IMO.

There was and is zero need for the Cole Young character though. He was good and has the action chops but he’s very much “generic fighter #4.” Less interesting than Stryker in the games.

I’m still shocked that studios don’t realize there’s 20 some years of lore and popularity carrying the property and still felt like they needed to create a new character to relate to the audience.

Mortal Kombat resulted in an extremely accurate pitch meeting.

Rush is excellent; Hunt-Lauda is the stuff of legend, and they did a very good job capturing the spirit of the thing imo. I particularly appreciate that while a lot of the racing circuits are CG, they filmed the Lauda crash scenes at the actual bit of the Nordschleife where the crash happened.

And honestly, there is probably no more happy thought a racing driver of days gone could have than that of dying of some mundane nonsense.

Didier Pironi was hobbled in an F1 car (he ran up the back of Alain Prost's car in heavy rain, which forever changed the way Prost looked at wet weather racing) only be killed in a boat racing accident. Michael Schumacher has been basically in a borderline vegetative state since hitting his head on a rock while skiing a little over a year after he retired from racing. Hunt died of a cardiac arrest in his sleep in his mid-40s. The Rat himself, Lauda - who actually inhaled fire in that accident - only recently passed away (also in his sleep) after an extended illness.

Fans of Warrior should recognize Storm Shadow. Not sure I'll watch this in a theater, but looks like something I could have on in the background while I play on my phone.

They did an origin story in the comics that talked about both Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow, which I thought was highly excellent as a young teenager.

I felt like De Niro played an out of touch unsure aging guy pretty well. He was never scary per-say and was more annoyed, confused, and then more annoyed at his anger.

Scarface was kind of bonkers when it came out, and was something of a bellwether, stylistically. But no, it did not age well at all. It is very much of its day.

Follow up on the Harry Potter streaming stupidity... the movies are leaving Peacock after today and will be airing on NBC’s tv channels for however long and won’t return to Peacock until an undetermined date in 2021. God knows when they’ll actually make it back HBO.
Another follow up on this streaming nonsense. After spending the holiday months on zero streaming services, the Harry Potter series returned to Peacock in February and will be leaving at the end of May, at which point it will return to HBO Max for the month of June, AND ONLY THE MONTH OF JUNE, and then will disappear to somewhere else for July. **** is crazy.

Watched RAD 3 times over the weekend. What an incredible piece of cinema history.
Tight. I recently got my steelbook blu-ray in, so looking forward to queuing that up sometime soon.

Army Of The Dead. I give it about a 3/10, and that 3 was because of decent gore and some cool action. Otherwise, horrendous.

I don’t see why Zach Snyder gets these huge budgets to make near 3 hour movies and they’re just straight trash.
