Hello, and welcome to another edition of "Movies Succeed Despite The Best Efforts Of Studio Executive". On today's episode, we get a behind-the-scenes look into why it took 25 years for Blade Runner to finally become a good movie.
Not wrong about that VO though.

I'm in the unique position that the only version of Blade Runner I've ever seen was The Final Cut, so thankfully I was spared that being my initial introduction.

Didn't realize it's on HBO, sounds like it's really horrible

No, they aren't wrong about the VO. But it was only added at their insistence in the first place, so I'm not praising a fish for swimming.

Another Round (Hulu) was really good. I'd heard about it via an interview between Mads Mikkelson and Daniel Craig (where they were talking about Casino Royale), and Craig went on and on about Mikkelson's performance in this new film. It's about four high school teachers that test a theory that most humans are born with a blood alcohol deficit, and to be happy, we need to drink small amounts of alcohol all day long. It's more about mid-life crisis and getting "stuck" in your life, and how alcohol can pull you out of it. Very well acted.

Awesome, didn't realize this was on Hulu, thanks for the heads up!

Mortal Kombat was a hell of a lot of fun. It lived up to my expectations, and the fight scenes were outstanding.

Major spoiler. Be warned.
When Scorpion appeared, yelled GET OVER HERE, and ripped the **** out of Subzero, I got chills. That last fight scene was great.
Dolby Vision looked terrific, and they really did a great job with the Atmos. My wife thought world war 3 was happening downstairs.

Only seen one of the best picture nominees, Trial of the Chicago Seven, which was about 75% trash. Covid year was not good for movies.

Saw 7 of the 2020 nominees. Irishman, Parasite and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood were great to watch.

We watched Sound Of Metal last night, and it was easily one of the top 2 or 3 most personally terrifying movie experiences of my life. The idea that something like that could happen, basically over the course of one or two days is just........... *shudder*

Wasn't me.
H&S was not a good movie, even for this franchise. Needed to cut about 40 minutes off of it.

We just watched it to finish up our Best Picture watch. I agree. I get bouts of tinnitus and every time I’m terrified that this is the time the ringing doesn’t stop and my hearing doesn’t come back.

As for Best Picture noms: Minari is my pick to win though surprisingly The Father ended up being my favorite watch.

Was it good enough for a boring, rainy day with nothing else going on?
Sure. I have watched it twice.
This you? :)

I do agree, they should have cut 30-45 minutes from it.

Hah.

Glad you enjoyed it. Something about it just didn't resonate. All the component parts were above average but when it was compiled it just didn't grab me. Sneaky funny Kevin Hart, tho.

Yeah, that’s the ideal Kevin Hart performance - a cameo. 30 minutes tops.

I’m a big fan of Statham and Rock, so I’ll generally give their stuff a try. This is the first FF movie that I’ve seen since... FF3?

So the Oscars decided that instead of showing clips from the nominated films, they’re going to show the nominees just awkwardly looking into the camera, most of whom are attending remotely. That’s a odd choice. You think I know what the costume design from Pinocchio looked like?? Why would you show me the designer instead of his Oscar nominated designs?!

Honestly they have no idea how to connect with casual moviegoers. This is even more of a circle jerk than usual.
