The last guy i think you could argue that “changed the game” would be A-Rod. And that is in the sense that he was 6’3” and weighed over 200 pounds and could still legitimately play shortstop. All while hitting 300 with lots of home runs. The counter point would be that since A-Rod, there really haven’t been a ton of tall athletic shortstops hitting bombs (Tulowitzski? Anyone else?)

Okay, you think Bryce Harper matters. Now I'm lost.
I'm saying Harper matters more than Trout

Mike Trout, the best player in the game, is irrelevant.

I think I understand what you're trying to say; however, what you originally said and what you're currently trying to say are roughly 309000 miles apart.

I'll admit it's hard for me to articulate

I also concede that it's a very Tony Kornheiserian perspective

johnny damon had a bigger cultural resonance than mike trout, so he has a better HOF case. is that the point here?

Won a WS with two different teams, after playing for a dud team. Rises above novelty, imo.

Source of the post again, I'm not saying he's not a good player. I'm saying in 50 years he will be a "fun fact" and that's it
Are you basically trying to say he played on a team that nobody cares about, and that even if he won 5 WS on said team, he wouldn't be as popular as he would if he had the same stats and won 0 WS with the Yankees?

So you're trying to generate conversation like a talk show host by taking a position that most everyone will disagree with?

A part of me died the day he passed. One of the best things I've ever gotten to do in my work life was sit in a show meeting and talk hitting with him.

You, sir, are a very smart man.

I think you could put Mike Piazza in this same category as far as the catcher position is concerned.

It took a long while but MiMH's horrifically bad take finally brought us together. :fist:

I was just gonna say, I just read a lot of tremendous takes in a thread of bad takes. Gwynn was maybe my favorite ever and i got Pucketts autograph at the 1994 asg so obviously he became a favorite.

Baseball was essentially banned in our house in 1995 but I always had a fondness for Puckett and Gwynn. Not only were they good players, they seemed like genuinely good people.
