You keep insisting on that 20 draw sample size as representative of per-game trends, and it's not accurate. When Bergeron is INOP or unavailable, he's not replaced at the dot 1-for-1; 'a' guy is not taking all 20 of the draws Bergeron would normally handle, his workload will be divided among multiple centers. There are only around half a dozen players in the whole League who average 20+ faceoffs per game, and most of them are upper-50% to low-60% winners (and the ones that aren't - like Sid - have people behind them on the chart who are hapless).

Most top centers take between 12-15 draws per game and win around 55% of them. Bergeron is an elite guy who takes over 20 draws per game and wins around 60% of them. So he takes more draws per game, and wins a greater percentage of them. There's nothing weird there.

TIL the person with the highest win percentage for faceoffs (with at least 1000 faceoffs taken) is Yanic Perreault clocking in at 61.14%

Bergeron is at 57.41%

Close to dead last on the list is Ryan Malone with 37.28%, but he's edged out by Jack Hughes at 35.69%.

To recap...meow says he’s startled by amount of faceoff losses. I say they are what they are, and they’ll even out to an ok rate in the long run. And then someone thought this thread should be involved. Happy to keep this going, but it’s pretty boring.

Face offs were dead even in the first period. Just an FYI.

What does the NHL do as a league better than the NBA

NBA vs NHL is tough.

NBA’s advantages are that star players have more freedom of skill than in the NHL (due to a number of factors like they’re on the court twice as long as Star NHL Players are andthe NBA is much less physical than the NHL is). However, its major drawbacks are the reffing can be very irritating and it’s top heavy. Because stars are brighter in the NBA, teams without stars are completely hopeless. I think I read that the top 4 seeds in the NBA conferences win 99% of the titles

NHL’s advantages are competitive balance and it’s the best officiated league of the major 4.

I am more likely to watch a Pens game than a Heat (my NBA team) game but I’m also more likely to watch a random NBA game than a random NHL game

NBA has only four teams that can possibly compete in any given year...the NHL has a dozen-ish...

We know the NBA isn't better officiated. The NFL is, I guess, better if you accept that defense is basically illegal now. I imagine MLB is the best at this point? I'm not sure, I don't really watch it...but it seems so easy now that there's review of home runs and sliding into the 2nd base...balls and strikes are so many data points that they don't matter at the series level much less the season level...

NHL refs are most likely to “let them play”. MLB umps think they’re the entertainment, NFL refs have apparently been instructed to call every single defensive infraction and the NBA has had actual betting scandals with their refs (albeit that was some time ago but the refs can take games over)

I’m not saying NHL refs are the best. Just the least worst

IIRC from the MLB thread I was the only person who didn’t want home plate umpires replaced by a computer, so I don’t want ulf to try to defend them

MLB umps are the best. They can still be better by going to robo umps, but they're still better than the rest.

Your parity comments are noted, and I'd point out those are sport related, not league related. Hockey is a better sport. NBA runs their league better. Still waiting on an actual rebuttal to this

justify “runs their league better”

it’s more popular, absolutely, but basketball has a much lower bar of entry than hockey does
