I agree but but my point with Trout is that he has no impact on the sport at large. his team sucks so he's not impacting the championship and he's pretty milquetoast personality-wise. so in 50 years he's really just going to be remembered for pure numbers which isn't really going to inspire awe for generations to come. The comparison (on my end anyways) was made to highlight that out of all the major sports, MLB is probably the top of the list of where great players get passes for not winning championships (or even getting into the playoffs).
Ernie Banks is a good comparison but even then, Banks is more important to baseball's history than Trout is (up to this point in Trout's career); Banks being the first black Cubs player

He's just going to be remembered for being really good at baseball. Nice

I feel like you guys are misinterpreting my take. I'm not saying Trout isn't one of the best players ever. He definitely is.
He's just irrelevant and because of that history isn't going to remember him in the same way that history remembers the other greats who were impactful to baseball. Mookie Betts isn't as good of a player but will be remembered more fondly

Yeesh...Personally I think that if Trout never makes the postseason again he’ll be remembered more as a novelty than an alltime great player
Although baseball is a team sport, it's much more geared toward individual accomplishments based on how the game is played...so team championships are way less weighted when it comes to overall evaluation of a player's individual career.
Mike Trout may go down as the best position player to ever lace them up. And he's doing all of this in a specialized pitcher, defensive shift, post-steroid, modern analytics era. Not to mention the fact that his being on 'not great' teams make his personal accomplishments even that much more impressive. Teams can pitch around him and still win.

Every part of it is true, though. You shut your mouth with your Sterling Moss nonsense.
I always thought he just got pipped by Fangio & Co in a run of bad timing, similar to anyone that played against the 90s Bulls. But he really did just race for Lotus/Cooper for national pride, sold out to Ferrari, then got his face ripped off at Goodwood before he could drive the Ferrari in '62. When I found that out he went from lovable loser to just loser, for me.

Also, as a not-baseball fan, all of this baseball talk is extremely confusing. "He's so great because opponents can negate his greatness and still win." wat

I guess here's another way to think about my point: if Mike Trout didn't exist, the game of baseball wouldn't be any different than it is right now, other than 3 AL MVPs going to other players

Ted Williams could hit OK but the dude never won a World Series.

The list of people who "changed the game" of baseball is like 5 people or less, yeah? If your point is Mike Trout isn't in the top 5 most influential players of all time... okay.I guess here's another way to think about my point: if Mike Trout didn't exist, the game of baseball wouldn't be any different than it is right now, other than 3 AL MVPs going to other players
Your words were he's a "novelty" and not an "all time great player".

I feel like you could probably say this about every other baseball player except Babe Ruth and Jackie Robinson.I guess here's another way to think about my point: if Mike Trout didn't exist, the game of baseball wouldn't be any different than it is right now, other than 3 AL MVPs going to other players

I don't mean Jackie Robinson "changed the game". I mean influenced the game in terms of who is winning the World Series. Or having some cultural impact like Bryce Harper being a lightning rod. He's played in three playoff games and got swept. That's it.The list of people who "changed the game" of baseball is like 5 people or less, yeah? If your point is Mike Trout isn't in the top 5 most influential players of all time... okay.I guess here's another way to think about my point: if Mike Trout didn't exist, the game of baseball wouldn't be any different than it is right now, other than 3 AL MVPs going to other players

Mike Trout is irrelevant to the sport. He's an alltime great player and the best player of the 2010s but if he never played baseball every eventual World Series winner still would've happened in the same way. The things that we talk about the sport would remain the same. He as a player doesn't mean anything to the sport at large
again, I'm not saying he's not a good player. I'm saying in 50 years he will be a "fun fact" and that's it

He only played in one post season series, which went to 7 games. Batted .200, had 1 RBI.Ted Williams could hit OK but the dude never won a World Series.
He might be closer to Trout level novelty than you realize.

Okay, you think Bryce Harper matters. Now I'm lost.
